Doctor Who star insists “progressive” new series is “doing the right thing”

Actress Varada Sethu, who plays a role in Doctor Who, has discussed the upcoming progressive season of the series. According to her, this new season is about taking the appropriate steps.

This month, I’ll be stepping onto the screen for the first time as Belinda Chandra, a companion character, in the BBC’s sci-fi series that’s coming back for its 15th season since it was rebooted in 2005, although it’s being advertised as season two due to Disney+’s acquisition.

After Peter Capaldi’s exit in 2017, the BBC finally broke new ground by casting women and Black actors as the famous Time Lord role for the first time. Jodie Whittaker was followed in this role (except for a brief appearance by David Tennant) by Ncuti Gatwa.

In 2023, when Russell T Davies came back as the show’s producer, the series began to reflect a wider range of characters and themes that celebrate diversity and inclusion. However, some parts of the fan community have labeled this current phase as “progressive” or “socially conscious”, which has led to some controversy among viewers.

Sethu views these remarks as evidence that the show is heading in the right direction. He shared this sentiment with Radio Times, stating, “There have been a few Doctor Woke [mentions] or so, but I believe we’re on the right path when we receive comments like those.

The term ‘Woke’ essentially signifies being open-minded, progressive, and compassionate towards others. Furthermore, according to this actor, the fundamental essence of Doctor Who revolves around kindness, love, and doing what is morally correct.” This actor, who once played Mundy Flynn in season 14 episode ‘Boom’, made this observation.

Sethu, who will share screen time with Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), mentioned that Gatwa had taken on the show’s bold stance against critics. In his words: “Ncuti would say, ‘Check us out. We get to be in the TARDIS. We’re going to ruffle feathers of so many people.’

While there’s still some time left before we see Sethu as Belinda, Gatwa previously hinted at the new character’s storyline. In his words, “She brings an incredible energy to the show and adds a remarkable dynamic to the TARDIS.

In the United Kingdom, you can catch Doctor Who on BBC One, while viewers outside the UK can find it on Disney+. For those in the UK, classic episodes of Doctor Who can be found on BBC iPlayer.
