Doctor Who spinoff 'The War Between the Land and the Sea' enters production

As a long-time Whovian who has witnessed the regeneration of Time Lords more times than I can count, I must say that the latest spinoff, “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” has me utterly thrilled! The UNIT-focused series created by Russell T. Davies is a breath of fresh air in the Whoniverse, and the fact that it’s being produced with Disney’s resources is nothing short of fantastic!

The collaboration between BBC and Disney+’s “Doctor Who” is moving smoothly ahead. The revamped series debuted earlier this year with a mix of responses; episodes such as “73 Yards” were highly praised, while others like “Space Babies” received more mediocre reviews. The future of the partnership remains uncertain. However, it’s confirmed that “Doctor Who” will return for season 2 on Christmas Day, featuring Ncuti Gatwa in the main role as the Fifteenth Doctor. Additionally, a new spinoff titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea” has begun production.

Over the years, the universe connected with “Doctor Who” (often referred to as the Whoniverse) has spawned numerous offshoots. Among these spinoffs, two stand out for their distinct tones: the intense and brooding “Torchwood” and the family-friendly “The Sarah Jane Adventures.” This new series is unique because it’s the first spinoff to leverage Disney’s extensive resources. Originating from the creative mind of Russell T. Davies, “The War Between the Land and the Sea” primarily focuses on UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce). In this show, The Doctor doesn’t appear as he seems to be occupied at the time the spinoff takes place. The main adversary is the Sea Devils, one of The Doctor’s longest-standing enemies dating back to the 1960s. The Sea Devils were reintroduced in the contemporary era of the show in 2022, during Jodie Whittaker’s tenure as The Doctor.

Read the official synopsis for The War Between the Land and Sea below, with thanks to the BBC:

“When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT step into action as the land and sea wage war.”

The show, titled “Doctor Who”, has begun filming with Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave, Colin MacFarlane, and Alexander Devrient in its main cast. To announce this exciting news, the official Doctor Who social media platforms posted a sneak peek from their first table read session. Here’s a look:

titled “The War Between Land and Sea“, is set to be a five-part production. Each installment will be orchestrated by Dylan Holmes Williams, known for directing the “Dot and Bubble” and “73 Yards” episodes of Doctor Who. At this time, there’s no announced release date, but we’ll make sure to share updates as they become available!
