Doctor Who Showrunner Teases the Final Member of the Unholy Trinity
Warning! Spoilers for Doctor Who season 15, episode 6 “The Interstellar Song Contest”
Russell T Davies, the showrunner for the Doctor Who series, has shed light on the enigma surrounding the “Unholy Trinity” from Season 15, implying that one more member remains undisclosed. The characters of the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) have traversed a long journey home, where they’ve encountered various adversaries such as Conrad Clarke (Jonah Hauer-King), a deceitful character who uses media to orchestrate smear campaigns against UNIT. However, it was in Season 15’s sixth episode, “The Interstellar Song Contest”, that the rogue Time Lord known as the Rani resurfaced, with Anita Dobson’s Mrs. Flood transforming into a new form played by Archie Panjabi.
After the surprising comeback of the Rani, Davies shared on Instagram hints about what her return means for the TARDIS crew and their associates. As the showrunner mentioned that Conrad, the two Rani’s form part of the often-hinted at “Unholy Trinity“, the third member remains unidentified. Additionally, Davies suggests that this ominous adversary is located 160 years ahead in time and will be delved into during the first installment of the two-part season finale “Wish World”.
What Davies’ Tease Means For Doctor Who Season 15’s “Unholy Trinity”
The Third Entity May Be The Doctor’s Oldest Foes
In the context of Doctor Who under Russell T Davies’ second stint as showrunner, references to the Pantheon evoke the various gods encountered by the Doctor during his journeys. However, Davies’ suggestion that this enemy dwells 160 years in the future places them squarely in the 22nd Century, hinting at a possible return of a specific antagonist. Interestingly, former companion Susan (Carol Ann Ford) is anticipated to be living in the 22nd Century. Given that the Dalek Invasion of Earth and subsequent conflicts between humanity and the Daleks took place here, it’s plausible that the third part of this trinity isn’t a single individual, but rather the Dalek Empire itself.
As a fan eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the Doctor’s journey, I can’t help but recall Gatwa’s previous statement about wanting to confront the terrors from Skaro on screen. Additionally, hints dropped by series producer Joe Collins and production designer Phillip Sims have fueled speculation that these creatures will make a comeback with an updated design in 2022. With the current run of episodes under the Disney+ co-production deal nearing its end, it seems that season 15’s finale might just offer the perfect opportunity to bring back the Doctor’s oldest adversaries for one final showdown.
Our Thoughts On Davies’ Final Unholy Trinity Tease
The Season 15 Finale Is Being Heralded As A Must-Watch Event
Regardless if it’s a deity or a Dalek, the finale of Doctor Who‘s season 15 is gaining status as a significant event. Alongside a theatrical premiere, the episode is being adjusted for a global release that synchronizes with its UK airing. Whatever the Doctor encounters in the 22nd Century, it’s evident that it will astound viewers just as much as it might catch the Time Lord off guard.
