Gradually, hints about its real identity emerged; the soldiers conducting the probe disclosed that the planet’s atmosphere contained Galvanic radiation and its surface was once encrusted with diamonds. The enigmatic nature of the creature terrorizing Aliss Fenly, the lone survivor at the base, bore a striking resemblance to the elusive voice-stealing entity that tormented Skye in “Midnight.” However, this creature had evolved over time.

Due to the episode occurring 400,000 years following “Midnight,” it was evident that the Midnight being in “The Well” had evolved beyond the amorphous entity that assumed victims’ bodies for survival. Instead, it appeared capable of manifesting a physical form and concealing itself among its victims to play a dangerous game with those around it. The Doctor discerned that this creature was engaged in a game, realizing that its ability to imitate people during their initial encounter had been part of the game. Furthermore, the creature’s penchant for playing games and its connection to the Doctor’s past were significant factors in the story.

Many fans have proposed numerous theories about a character named Mrs. Flood from “Doctor Who” Season 2. The way she seems to control the Doctor’s journeys, as depicted in “The Well,” could support the idea that she is connected to the Doctor himself, potentially even his old adversary, the Master. In the year 2014, the Master returned in a new form on “Doctor Who,” now known as Missy. Similar to Missy, Missy has been manipulating the Doctor’s travels, going to great lengths to ensure the Doctor and Clara Oswald met and remained together. Reminiscent of this, Mrs. Flood has appeared frequently throughout Season 2, often following in the footsteps of the Doctor. Intriguingly, the season 1 finale, “Empire of Death,” hinted at Mrs. Flood’s sinister intentions to instigate war on the very gates of Heaven. This could imply that she is aiming to challenge the Pantheon of Gods that the Doctor has been facing lately, suggesting she is not one of them but rather a Time Lord with ambitions for ultimate power and control.

Could the Toymaker or a Time Lord Be Behind the Changes to Time?

In the initial scenes of “The Well,” Belinda inquired about the future they’d arrived at, questioning if there were any remaining humans. The Doctor reassured her that there would always be humans, explaining that in time, humanity spread throughout the cosmos. Later on, the Doctor conversed with Shaya, the trooper leader, who disclosed she was from Lombardo, a planet supposedly allied with Earth. Yet, Shaya admitted to never knowing of either Earth or the human race. This suggested someone or something might have been tampering with the Doctor’s timeline in “The Well.

In other words, Belinda found out that none of her fellow soldiers or Aliss were familiar with Earth’s existence either. This is reminiscent of the finale of “The Robot Revolution,” the first episode of this season, which showed the remains of Earth drifting through space on May 24, 2025. It seems that something has rewritten history by destroying Earth, causing time to flow along a different path. As a devoted movie buff, if I were to speculate about Mrs. Flood, it could be that she’s secretly a Time Lord orchestrating this mysterious plot. This theory would make sense of her ability to follow the Doctor across time and space, identify the Vindicator he uses for navigating the TARDIS, and manipulate historical events.

However, it’s also plausible that the Gods of Chaos, with their immense power over time, could be behind these events. After all, we know they can disrupt the natural order. And let’s not forget, the Toymaker has previously interfered with the Doctor’s timeline, so he too could potentially be involved.
