Doctor Who Reveals Shocking Secret: The Doctor’s Hidden Great-Grandfather Status!
Brace yourselves! Spoilers for the 7th episode of Doctor Who‘s season 15, titled “Wish World,” are coming up. In the very first episode of this popular series, we learned that the main character has a granddaughter named Susan. Since then, the show’s creators have been relatively secretive about the Doctor’s family background. However, hints about his relatives have been dropped in Doctor Who‘s Disney era. Susan’s appearance in “The Interstellar Song Contest” caught many viewers off guard, despite these previous mentions. Apart from Georgia Tennant’s Jenny, who is a clone/daughter of David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor, the show has been reluctant to introduce members of the Doctor’s family. But it seems that this could change in the upcoming episodes.
In the 7th episode of season 15 titled “Wish World,” Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor speculates that Poppy might actually be his real daughter instead of just part of a global illusion. This theory, if true, would add an intriguing twist to the series. However, it’s been hinted throughout the show that the Doctor has or will have children who in turn will also have offspring. The number of generations is unknown, but we do know that at least one generation exists, as evidenced by Susan. Although the show hasn’t revealed what happened to Susan after her departure from the Doctor, “Wish World” subtly hints at more to come.
Doctor Who’s Conrad Hints That Susan Had A Child After Leaving The TARDIS
Conrad’s summary of why companions leave the TARDIS seems too coincidental
In simpler terms, the First Doctor portrayed by William Hartnell closed the doors of the TARDIS on 23rd-century Earth, leaving his granddaughter Susan behind. Susan had developed feelings for a man named David (Peter Fraser), and the Doctor decided to let her go, understanding that she might choose him over her own happiness. Although Susan reappeared in “The Five Doctors” in 1983, her life following this departure has been seldom mentioned. However, Jonah Hauer-King’s character Conrad Clark may have hinted at a new family for Susan in the story “Wish World.
In a taletelling role akin to Earth’s narrator, Conrad shares the narrative of a character he calls “The Doctor,” who is none other than the Doctor himself. As he discusses the succession of travelers who have journeyed with the Doctor in the TARDIS and later departed, Conrad describes that these companions’ departures were often due to romantic relationships, marriage, and family life. Susan, a companion who left the Doctor for love, is a recent returnee to the show, making it seem somewhat coincidental that Conrad would be referring to anyone more explicitly than Carole Ann Ford’s character.
Earth-dwelling beings were known as humans, and Doctor Who had numerous human companions who adored him and embarked on journeys with him. However, from time to time, these friends would depart to start families of their own by falling in love, marrying, and having children. As a result, the Doctor was often left alone.

If we think that Conrad is talking about Susan, it suggests that she married David and had a child following her departure from the TARDIS. This child would be the grandchild of the Doctor, making him a great-grandfather. In this scenario, Poppy could be the Doctor’s daughter, which would make her a grandmother. Given how infrequently the subject of the Doctor’s family has been discussed throughout the years, this revelation would bring a significant amount of information on this topic.
Doctor Who Already Set A Precedent For The Doctor Being A Great-Grandfather
Other Doctor Who projects have introduced Susan’s offspring (but they’re not canon yet)
In terms outside of the show itself, the Doctor Who franchise extends quite broadly, encompassing other live-action series like Torchwood and the upcoming War Between the Land and Sea, which significantly contribute to the main narrative. Other formats such as audio dramas, comics, and novels may offer fantastic Doctor Who tales, but unless they’re validated by the show or its spinoffs, they reside in a separate continuity. However, an audio adventure for Doctor Who has already enriched the family lineage of the Doctor, through the introduction of Susan.
Carole Ann Ford has revisited her character Susan in various projects by Big Finish Productions, giving voice to Susan as the storyline expands on her life after the Doctor. In these additional tales, Susan has already had a child with David, so this development might not be entirely unexpected within the broader Doctor Who universe. As a result, fans who delve deeper into the Doctor Who saga may not find it too shocking if it’s revealed that the Doctor is now a great-grandfather, as this twist has been hinted at in other Doctor Who narratives.
