Doctor Who legends return as four new spin-offs confirmed

As a long-time fan of Doctor Who who has witnessed the regeneration of time lords more times than I can count, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming audio adventures featuring the return of some of my favorite classic companions! The Companion Chronicles: Families promises to be an exciting journey back in time with the First Doctor and his intrepid crew.

In a recent announcement, Doctor Who has revealed plans for four new audio stories, featuring some beloved figures from the series’ history reprising their roles in these spin-off productions.

In the Companion Chronicles series, Big Finish Productions is unveiling a fresh, new boxset titled “Families“, featuring a collection of dramatized readings centered around the “brave explorers” who journeyed with the First Doctor (previously portrayed by William Hartnell).

The stars who are back for this production are Maureen O’Brien, Carole Ann Ford, and Peter Purves, each taking on their previous characters Vicki, Susan Foreman, and Steven Taylor. Additionally, Stephen Noonan and Lauren Cornelius join the cast, portraying the Doctor and Dodo Chaplet respectively.

In the initial escapade titled “The Temple of Light,” we find Vicki stranded within a completely alien civilization. Time appears to have stood still, causing the TARDIS and her companions, including the Doctor and the others, to vanish without a trace.

Stardust and Ashes narrates Susan’s journey as she reminisces about an old tale from her past. In this narrative, she and her makeshift family found themselves under the control of artificial intelligence, with their lives in limbo. Throughout these challenging circumstances, she reflects on the valuable insights she gained from the experience.

In “The White Ship,” it’s Steven Purves who finds himself right in the thick of things. This tale finds both him and the Doctor arriving in Normandy during the Middle Ages, where King Henry I is readying his ship for a journey to England. However, due to a case of confusion, Steven finds himself caught up in a situation where his identity gets mixed up with someone else’s.

In the concluding tale, titled “The Y Factor“, Dodo, previously portrayed by Jackie Lane, joins forces with the Doctor to combat a menacing “alien fungus”. This organism has the power to manipulate thoughts, often resulting in disastrous outcomes.

Dominic G Martin expressed great pleasure about creating the latest installments of the Companion Chronicles: “It’s truly a privilege!” He added that this esteemed series offers an exceptional opportunity for the Doctor’s cherished companions to unfold their own intriguing narratives, based on their unique experiences and told from their perspectives.

The authors have crafted enchanting stories for Susan, Vicki, and Stephen, portrayed by the exceptionally skilled original cast members, and we’re delighted to welcome back Dodo. I genuinely hope everyone will appreciate our efforts – cheers to many more years of Companion Chronicles!

In April 2025, the audiobook “Doctor Who – The Companion Chronicles: Families” will be available for purchase. You can secure your copy by pre-ordering it right now!
