Doctor Who is voted Matt Smith's best performance...by a landslide!

As a dedicated fan who has followed Matt Smith’s illustrious career with keen eyes, I wholeheartedly concur with the overwhelming consensus that his portrayal of the Doctor is his pièce de résistance. While his roles in House of the Dragon and The Crown have undeniably been captivating, it was his enchanting interpretation of the Time Lord that truly opened the doors to an entirely new realm of fandom.

Although Matt Smith is now widely recognized for his role as Daemon Targaryen in HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” many fans will continue to associate him primarily with his performance as the Doctor on “Doctor Who.

For three seasons, Smith played the Eleventh Doctor, appearing in almost 50 episodes. Alongside David Tennant, these seasons are often seen as the golden era of the ‘New Who’ period in the franchise. Fans frequently express their desire for him to return triumphantly, but Matt Smith himself isn’t keen on reprising his cherished role at this point in time.

Absolutely, Smith’s impressive film career continued to expand. He notably portrayed Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in Netflix’s series “The Crown”. Other significant roles include those in “Last Night in Soho” and his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Dr. Michael Morbius in “Morbius”. However, outside of “Doctor Who”, his most prominent role to date is that of Daemon Targaryen in “House of the Dragon”.

Doctor Who is voted Matt Smith's best performance...by a landslide!

Despite it appearing clear from the beginning, a poll was conducted by RadioTimes to decisively determine Matt Smith’s finest performance across all his roles. With around 1,200 participants, Smith’s portrayal of the Doctor emerged as the clear favorite, garnering over 80% of the votes. Daemon Targaryen finished second, with Prince Philip in third place. The results indicate a significant lack of favor for Morbius and Last Night in Soho. Fortunately, these two were at least mentioned. It might be best to overlook Smith’s interpretation of Mr. Collins in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies altogether.

On a site primarily dedicated to Game of Thrones, I can still acknowledge that Smith’s portrayal of the Doctor is arguably his finest acting. He played a significant role in introducing Doctor Who to a new wave of enthusiasts, delivering some of the most impactful performances in the show’s 60-year lifespan. For now, House of the Dragon holds the second spot, but that doesn’t diminish the brilliance of his Doctor Who performance.
