Doctor Who gets new spin-off with Inside No. 9 star

As a long-time fan of both Reece Shearsmith’s brilliant work and the Doctor Who universe, I can barely contain my excitement for this upcoming audio series from Big Finish! With his previous appearances on the show, coupled with his knack for delivering chilling performances in projects like Inside No. 9, I have no doubt that Shearsmith will breathe new life into the role of Governor Robert Hodan.

Actor Reece Shearsmith, known for his role in “Inside No. 9”, is making a comeback in the Doctor Who universe with a fresh audio series of “Doctor Who” produced by Big Finish.

Previously featured in several “Doctor Who” episodes, including a season nine stint alongside Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, this actor is now preparing for his first appearance with Big Finish in the production titled “Planet Krynoid.

In the upcoming spin-off, Steve Shearsmith is set to portray Governor Robert Hodan in a trilogy of episodes titled ‘Daylight’ (written by Jonathan Morris), ‘Dusk’ (written by Jonathan S Powell), and ‘Nightfall’ (written by Chris Chapman).

Paul McGann is also set to reprise his role as the Eighth Doctor in episode two.

The official summary for Planet Krynoid goes like this: “For a century, Sunlight has been a guiding light in a turbulent galaxy, an artificial oasis on a frigid planet, providing sanctuary for the wealthy and employment opportunities for the least fortunate workers. However, according to advertisements, that’s just what it appears to be.

Regrettably for Governor Robert Hodan, an engineer has found some peculiar pods within a satellite. As a result, the once radiant and verdant haven known as Sunlight will undergo a significant change.

On planets where the Krynoid is present, it’s not uncommon for the flora to consume the fauna instead. This is something the Doctor is all too aware of.

‘Why haven’t you tried one yet?’ Shearsmith expressed this upon announcing his new role.

I was overjoyed when invited to join this production. It’s an incredibly massive drama that reminds me of a classic 1970s disaster movie, such as “The Poseidon Adventure”. The situation seems to deteriorate more and more.

In a similar vein, episode two writer Jonathan S Powell referred to the series as “Doctor Who‘s counterpart to The Last of Us and The Walking Dead,” stating that it presents “A chilling portrayal of societal breakdown caused by one of television’s most frightening creatures: the Krynoid.

Planet Krynoid releases in April 2025.
