Doctor Who fans convinced David Tennant is returning for Christmas as BBC shares new video

Many viewers of Doctor Who believe David Tennant will reprise his role as the Time Lord in the upcoming 2026 Christmas special, penned by the show’s creator, Russell T Davies.

The actor portrayed the Tenth Doctor from 2005 until January 1st, 2010, with a return appearance in a 2013 special celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary. He also played the Fourteenth Doctor in three episodes that aired in 2023.

So, the BBC just dropped a new interview with David Tennant as part of this online series called ‘The Whoniverse Show,’ and it’s pretty cool. They’re celebrating 20 years since his first proper episode, ‘The Christmas Invasion,’ and he spends a few minutes just talking about his time playing The Doctor. It’s a nice little trip down memory lane for us fans!

Fans are wondering why David Tennant would agree to such a brief interview, and they believe there might be a bigger reason behind it.

Since Billie Piper, who previously played the Doctor’s companion, is already confirmed for next year’s Christmas special, most people believe David Tennant will also make an appearance. It’s unclear exactly what role she—or he—will play, but possibilities include the Doctor, Rose Tyler, or her ‘Bad Wolf’ persona.

Fans are buzzing online, with many predicting a popular figure will return for the Christmas special. One fan wrote on X, ‘He’s getting a lot of attention lately, and now this? I’m certain he’ll be back for the Christmas special!’ Another agreed, stating, ‘He’s definitely coming back for it, isn’t he?’

Someone else doubted David Tennant would have time to film a short studio segment about an episode from 20 years ago, but they believe a reunion with Billie Piper is likely planned for Christmas 2026.

Someone else pointed out it seems unlikely David Tennant would have filmed in a decorated studio for only five minutes of nostalgic comments about ‘The Christmas Invasion’ for the Whoniverse program.

The excitement is also spilling over to Instagram and YouTube, where fans are confidently predicting he’ll be in the 2026 Christmas special!

David Tennant’s final episode, ‘The Giggle,’ showed that his version of the Doctor (the Fourteenth) is still around with his own TARDIS. However, he’s chosen to relax and let Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor take on the responsibility of saving the world – or, as seen in ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ let Russell Tovey give it a shot.

So, Mark Gatiss just dropped some awesome news! Apparently, he wrote a Doctor Who script years ago for David Tennant, and he’s hinting it might be coming to life as an audio drama. He even said it’s “rather good,” which, coming from him, is a huge compliment! I’m seriously excited to see (or rather, hear) what this is all about.
