Doctor Who episode featuring disgraced presenter purged from streaming
As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of immersion in the Whoniverse, I find myself at a crossroads, contemplating the recent turn of events surrounding Huw Edwards and his cameo in “Fear Her.”
2023 marked the debut of BBC making available the complete collection of “Doctor Who” episodes on BBC iPlayer for the first time, encompassing both classic and contemporary shows. Now, iPlayer serves as a central hub for all things related to the Whoniverse. However, one specific episode from David Tennant’s tenure that features disgraced BBC News presenter Huw Edwards has been removed permanently.
In the previous month, it was confirmed that Huw Edwards admitted to owning inappropriate images of minors. Known for his esteemed work as a news broadcaster, including announcing Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in 2022, Edwards had built an impressive career in journalism, becoming a notable face on British television. His fame extended to appearing in the “Fear Her” episode of Doctor Who, sharing screen time with David Tennant as The Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose. However, following Huw Edwards’ conviction, this specific BBC episode has been removed from broadcast.
2006 marked the broadcast of “Fear Her”, an episode where the Doctor, accompanied by Rose Tyler, traveled six years ahead to witness the London Olympics. In a housing complex, they encounter a girl tormented by spectral images of her father; in her distress, she causes large groups of people to vanish. Notably, Huw Edwards reports the news for the BBC during this episode. The show’s episode also contains one of its all-time funniest scenes, as the Doctor is unable to exit the TARDIS due to a jammed door because it was blocked.
The “Doctor Who” episode has been momentarily taken off BBC iPlayer for re-dubbing. This means that the original scene featuring Huw Edwards will be replaced, effectively erasing his appearance. However, we’re not sure how long this process might take before it’s available to stream once more. According to a BBC representative, as reported by Deadline.
As you would expect we are actively considering the availability of our archive. While we don’t routinely delete content from the BBC archive as it is a matter of historical record, we do consider the continued use and re-use of material on a case-by-case basis.
Huw Edwards has also appeared in various other media. He starred in the James Bond movie “Skyfall,” and some people are requesting his scene to be cut from that film. Notably, the show “Fear Her” is currently available on Max in the US. However, it remains uncertain if the US will receive a dubbed version of it; let’s keep our fingers crossed!
