Doctor Who boss weighs in on Disney’s future involvement in the series
As a long-time enthusiast of the Whoniverse, I must admit that the initial excitement surrounding Disney’s investment has been somewhat tempered by the performance of season 1. However, I’ve learned over the years that patience is key when it comes to Doctor Who.
When BBC revealed that Disney was pouring substantial resources into the Whoniverse, everyone got thrilled. This implied a bigger budget for the show and wider viewership due to its streaming on Disney+. However, today, the first season of Russell T. Davies’ revamped series didn’t meet the high expectations we had. Yet, Davies isn’t anticipating Disney will withdraw anytime soon: “patience is required as these things need time to grow.”
In contrast to expectations, Disney wasn’t entirely satisfied with the audience numbers for season 1 of Doctor Who, but it did impress in its intended age group. Although the relationship between Doctor Who and Disney might be a bit uncertain, the Doctor Who universe has been mapped out until 2025. As anticipated, season 2 will debut on BBC and Disney+ as scheduled. Moreover, a new spinoff series titled The War Between the Land and the Sea is in the works, focusing on the Sea Devils. For now, the future remains somewhat uncertain
In an attempt to instill faith among the fans, Russell T. Davies has given a glimmer of optimism and urged patience. He explained to SFX Magazine that such decisions are typical in the industry and that they require time, much like any other business
Regarding the timeline for deciding about the show’s continuation, Davies mentioned that it seems probable that Disney will make a decision once season 2 concludes in 2025. In simpler terms, he suggested that the verdict should come out after season 2 finishes airing, which has been our expectation all along
Season 14 of Doctor Who, often referred to as the first season of the new era, was a blend of strong and weak points. The latest Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, delivered an outstanding performance, infusing the role with vibrant energy and intricate subtleties. Moreover, Millie Gibson’s portrayal of new companion Ruby Sunday was exceptional. While some episodes, such as “73 Yards,” were captivating, others like “Space Babies” and “The Devil’s Chord” fell short of expectations
2024 Christmas Day marks the start of Doctor Who season 2, entitled “Joy to the World,” featuring Bridgerton‘s Nicola Coughlan. The rest of the season will air at a later date in 2025. Until then, the future of the Whoniverse remains uncertain
