Doctor Who boss teases possible new spin-off
As a long-time fan of Doctor Who, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia at the prospect of a new spin-off series based on this year’s Christmas special, Joy to the World. The Time Hotel in 4202, with its ability to transport guests through time, brings back memories of watching Mr Benn as a child and dreaming about stepping into that magical costume shop.
The idea of a spin-off series set in the Time Hotel is truly enticing. It’s like Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat are offering us a chance to relive our childhood dreams, but with the Doctor and all the excitement that comes with it. I can just imagine the Doctor, ever curious and adventurous, unable to resist the allure of the Time Hotel.
And let’s not forget the potential Easter eggs that could be hidden throughout the series, such as references to classic Doctor Who episodes or even sneaky nods to other beloved BBC children’s shows like Mr Benn. It would be a delightful treat for fans both old and new.
As for the ending of Joy to the World, I must say I found it quite moving. The idea of Joy leading people to the manger is a beautiful twist on the traditional Nativity story. It’s a lovely thought that even a character as unconventional as Joy could play such an important role in one of the most celebrated stories in history.
To finish off, I can’t help but wonder what kind of trouble the Doctor and Joy would get into if they were to team up for a spin-off series. Perhaps they could stumble upon a rogue Time Lord or two, or maybe even find themselves lost in time itself! Only time will tell, and I for one can hardly wait to see where this new adventure takes us.
Oh, and as a final thought, I’d like to think that if Mr Benn were still around, he’d be the first guest at the Time Hotel. After all, who better to explore the wonders of time travel than the man who made it his business?
Doctor Who spoilers follow.
The head honcho of ‘Doctor Who’, Russell T Davies, has hinted at the possibility of launching a fresh spin-off series stemming from the storyline of this year’s Christmas episode.
In the upcoming 2024 holiday special, named “Joy to the World“, we find the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) making a reservation at the Time Hotel in the year 4202. Patrons of this unique establishment could vacation at any point in time, including London during the Blitz or the moment when JFK was assassinated.
In this scenario, Joy, portrayed by guest star Nicola Coughlan, joined forces with the Doctor to thwart the impending demise of the universe.
This installment showcased numerous hidden references, such as ‘the magical costume shop of Mr Benn’, which paid homage to an iconic children’s series from the 70s, ‘Mr Benn’. In this classic program, the protagonist would visit a special shop and step through a magic door, transforming himself into different characters that led him on adventures in various worlds.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Davies and writer Steven Moffat hinted at the potential return of the Time Hotel in future Doctor Who episodes. They suggested a possible spin-off series, describing it as a modernized version of the classic series, “Mr Benn.
Davies suggested, “Maybe we could create a spin-off based on that idea, Steven?” To which Moffat responded enthusiastically, “That sounds like an entire show to me! It’s like a modern take on ‘Mr. Benn’. We could definitely revive the Time Hotel. I can hardly imagine the Doctor being able to resist visiting there!
The final scene showed the Doctor traveling to Bethlehem in the year 1, prior to Joy being seen by others.
When asked if there were any reservations about depicting the birth of Jesus Christ, Moffat responded: “Since it’s a Christmas special, it seems appropriate to recognize his origins, don’t you think? I believe that’s acceptable. And it’s such a beautiful tale, why not share it?
I find it delightful that Joy, who is charming, guided the crowd to the manger. I believe this concept is wonderful, heartwarming, and endearing. Many children who participated in Nativity plays might even reflect on this thought.” He further commented.
In my gaming world, I catch up with Doctor Who adventures on BBC One here in the UK. For those living beyond these shores, it’s streamed on Disney+. If I’m in the UK, I can also revisit the classic episodes of this fantastic series on BBC iPlayer.
