Doctor Who boss Russell T. Davies discusses the mysteries of “73 Yards”
As a dedicated fan who’s been following Doctor Who since its inception, I must say that “73 Yards” was nothing short of a masterpiece. The episode took us on a captivating journey through British folklore, leaving us with a chilling sense of dread and anticipation.
In the most recent series of Doctor Who, opinions were split, but there’s no denying that “73 Yards” was a standout episode. Instead of delving into traditional science fiction, this installment offered a spine-tingling British take on horror folklore.
In a secluded Welsh countryside, young Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) is left on her own following the Doctor’s disappearance. At a constant distance of 73 yards, a mysterious woman maintains a watchful eye over her. While this woman doesn’t seem to pose an immediate danger, she gives off an unsettling vibe and always stays at the same distance. Village folk instill fear in Ruby by claiming that she has disturbed an ancient fairy circle, leading Ruby to believe she may have accidentally unleashed an old curse. Whenever Ruby discusses the woman with others, they either respond with hostility or show terror and flee.
The episode stood out as a remarkable moment within the series. At the moment, it holds the highest IMDb rating among the new season’s episodes, boasting an 8.2/10 score. The intrigue surrounding its storyline continues to captivate viewers, with fans still actively trying to decipher its mysteries even months after its release. In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, showrunner Russell T. Davies commented that it was comparable to other significant episodes, such as ’73 Yards’, suggesting that it leaves an enduring impact on viewers.
In the latest game episode, when we encounter the enigmatic old lady, she whispers something that leaves us bewildered and disturbed. It’s unclear what she says, but Davies suggests it transcends ordinary language. There’s an underlying force at play here that’s far more potent. “You’re not even grasping the question because there’s nothing a woman could utter in a few seconds that would make me abandon my own flesh and blood,” he clarified. “Such a statement doesn’t exist. So, consequently, whatever this woman is doing goes beyond mere words; it’s deeper, darker, more malevolent, and potentially dangerous.
Of course, Davies isn’t dishing out all his secrets. Instead, he guides viewers towards an often-overlooked aspect – the TARDIS Perception Filter, a tool used by the Doctor and his companions to understand alien languages. He hints at this connection in episode eight. However, he playfully warns that he won’t go into further detail about it.
It seems the mystery will indeed forever be a mystery. “73 Yards” is now streaming on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Disney+ in the U.S. and elsewhere. The next season of Doctor Who will begin on Christmas Day with “Joy to the World,” starring Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan!
