Doctor Who boss announces new spinoff: The War Between Land and Sea

As a long-time fan of Doctor Who, I am thrilled to hear that Russell T. Davies is back at the helm of this iconic franchise and expanding its universe with new projects. The announcement of “The War Between Land and Sea,” a UNIT-based spinoff starring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, has me incredibly excited!

Russell T. Davies is once again in charge of the “Doctor Who” series, and he’s not limiting himself to just the primary program. At Comic-Con, he unveiled a new UNIT spinoff titled “The War Between Land and Sea” which will feature Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in leading roles.

As a passionate fan of “Doctor Who,” I’m thrilled about the upcoming spinoff focusing on the Sea Devils. Although they didn’t play significant roles during the modern era, their brief appearance in Jodie Whittaker’s tenure left me underwhelmed, in the special “Legend of the Sea Devils” (2022). But, these intriguing villains have a rich history that predates the current era. The Sea Devils were first introduced as enemies of the Doctor way back in 1972, making them one of the oldest adversaries for our beloved Time Lord. Their stories have been interwoven throughout the show’s history, most memorably during Jon Pertwee’s tenure as the Third Doctor. I can’t wait to see how their legacy unfolds in this new series!

In a new series, penned by Davies and McTighe, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), UNIT’s leading figure, and Colonel Ibrahim (Alexander Devrient) make their comeback. According to Davies, this offshoot is set to bring significant upheaval to the Doctor Who universe. Here’s a sneak peek at the official summary:

When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.

“Davies expressed his gratitude in a statement for working with such an impressive acting ensemble. This production promises to be a powerful and exhilarating drama that will significantly impact The Whoniverse. In the Doctor’s absence, humanity finds itself in danger.”

As a longtime fan of British television and a dedicated viewer of Doctor Who, I’m both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming spinoff series. Having grown up watching the Time Lord’s adventures on the BBC, I’ve seen firsthand the passion and dedication the show inspires in its audience. But with the latest season of Doctor Who receiving mixed reviews on Disney+, I can’t help but feel that the collaboration between the BBC and Disney is hanging by a thread.

I’m excitedly waiting for the debut of “The War Between the Land and Sea” in 2025, as no specific release date has been announced yet. On the other hand, you can stream the first season of “Doctor Who” with its new lead actor Ncuti Gatwa on Disney+ right now. Don’t miss out, and mark your calendars for a special Christmas Day airing of the latest season!
