Doctor Who adds Casualty and Good Omens stars for Christmas special
As a devoted Whovian with decades of time travel under my belt, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when I heard that Steven Moffat was back for the Christmas special. It’s like having an old friend drop by for dinner and bringing along some intriguing new faces to meet!
Doctor Who spoilers follow.
In the upcoming Christmas special, it’s been verified that the actors from Casualty and Good Omens, including Doctor Who, will make an appearance.
Previously known ‘Doctor Who’ screenwriter, Steven Moffat, returns to craft the holiday special titled ‘Joy to the World’. In this production, actress Nicola Coughlan from ‘Bridgerton’ takes on the role of Joy.
In a fresh trailer, it has been disclosed that The Doctor will encounter Joy this coming Christmas season as she spends time all by herself in a London hotel. However, her peaceful holiday gets disrupted when a Silurian unexpectedly enters her room.
According to reports from The Radio Times, as published in Doctor Who Magazine, it’s been confirmed that Jonathan Aris will portray the Silurian character Melnak. Notably, Aris has worked with showrunner Moffat on Sherlock and more recently, he played the Quartermaster Angel in Good Omens.
As Joy attempts to ward off the fearful Silurian using a hairdryer, The Doctor is preoccupied by journeying through various moments in the 20th century to provide a cheese toastie and a pumpkin-flavored latte.
Hilda and Basil in Doctor Who’s ’Joy to the World’
A journey back to World War II London finds The Doctor interrupting the luxurious hotel room of a nostalgic couple, Hilda and Basil, who were celebrating the holiday; this role is set to be portrayed by renowned actress Julia Watson, famously known from “Casualty,” and Peter Benedict, best recognized from “Dark.”
In another adventure of mine, I unwittingly found myself aboard the fabled Orient Express, where my journey intersected with Sylvia (Niamh Marie Smith), Edmund Hillary (Phil Baxter), and Tenzing Norgay (Samuel Sherpa-Moore).
As a gamer immersed in the world of ‘Joy to the World’, I’ll be stepping into the shoes of Steph de Whalley, the charming and efficient receptionist manning the desk at the London hotel where our protagonist, Joy, will be spending her festive season.
Previously this year, Steven Moffat confessed that he experienced mixed emotions when penning the 2024 Christmas special as it could potentially mark the final Doctor Who episode he would ever write.
Speaking with TV Choice, he mused at the end of “Boom” and “Joy to the World,” saying, “Were those really the last moments for the Doctor? Could that have been a farewell?”
In the United Kingdom, the TV series “Doctor Who” is aired on BBC One, while it can be found on Disney+ everywhere else. For those in the UK, you can access classic episodes of “Doctor Who” on BBC iPlayer.
