Recent news has emerged regarding Marvel’s upcoming plans for Doctor Strange. As discussions about a potential third Doctor Strange movie pick up, details are coming to light about what’s happening with the project and what changes might be made as development begins.
Doctor Strange 3 begins early development, to have a new director
Marvel Studios is starting work on a third Doctor Strange movie, according to Nexus Point News. This is the first major step towards a new solo film for the character since the release of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ three years ago. Marvel is now looking for a director to lead the project.
When Marvel announced the sequel, they said Scott Derrickson would direct and described it as their first genuinely scary movie. Initially, the story was going to focus on both Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff. However, Derrickson left the project in early 2020 because of disagreements with the studio, and Sam Raimi took over as director. Michael Waldron, a writer from the Loki series, then rewrote the script. Filming was also delayed and had to be rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Elizabeth Olsen revealed that Marvel told her only three weeks before filming began that her character, Wanda, would be the main villain. She had anticipated the story would follow the path set by the WandaVision series. However, director Sam Raimi and writer Michael Waldron made significant changes to the plot while they were filming. The movie concludes with a scene introducing Clea, played by Charlize Theron, hinting at what Doctor Strange will do next.
According to Nexus Point News, Benedict Cumberbatch is now actively participating in the early stages of development, including conversations about who will write and direct the project. He’s reportedly interested in Sam Mendes, but Mendes is currently busy working on four separate films about The Beatles.
According to the report, Marvel doesn’t anticipate Sam Raimi or Michael Waldron being involved in a third Doctor Strange movie. Production on Doctor Strange 3 won’t start until filming for Avengers: Secret Wars is complete.
