Do you need to watch WandaVision before watching Agatha All Along?

As a seasoned gamer and avid Disney+ subscriber with an insatiable appetite for Marvel content, I eagerly await the release of “Agatha All Along.” The buzz around this dark fantasy miniseries has been deafening, and my excitement knows no bounds!

Today is an exciting day! In just a few hours, the initial installments of “Agatha All Along” will be available on Disney+, and it’s difficult to keep our anticipation in check. Indeed! Preliminary reviews have been pouring in, with many critics lavishing praise on this nine-episode dark fantasy miniseries. This is hardly unexpected, given that its precursor was a resounding success.

Surprise! I didn’t realize you weren’t aware. “Agatha All Along” is actually a spin-off from another Disney+ miniseries called “WandaVision.” This series marked the debut of the first television series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and was launched on Disney+ in January 2021, similar to “Agatha All Along.” Both shows are inspired by characters from Marvel Comics. Specifically, “WandaVision” revolves around the characters Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Vision, who are also at the heart of “Agatha All Along.

The miniseries revolves around a newly married couple, Wanda and Vision, endowed with supernatural abilities, who appear to lead idyllic lives in Westview, New Jersey. However, as they begin to observe peculiarities within their supposedly flawless existence, it becomes evident that all is not what it seems. In this series, Emmy-nominated actors Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany took on the roles of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Vision respectively. Alongside them, a host of other gifted performers graced the screen, including Kathryn Hahn who brought Agnes/Agatha Harkness, another character from Marvel Comics, to life.

In the new show Agatha All Along, Kathryn Hahn reprises her character as Agatha Harkness. This series unfolds after the events of WandaVision, focusing on the former powerful witch making an attempt at a comeback. If you’re curious whether or not watching the original series is essential before diving into this spinoff, let us address that question for you.

Do you need to watch WandaVision before watching Agatha All Along?

You will enjoy Agatha All Along just fine without having watched WandaVision

While it’s generally beneficial to watch an original series before its sequel or spinoff to enhance the viewing experience, this rule isn’t strictly necessary for the case of “Agatha All Along.” Even if you haven’t watched “WandaVision,” you won’t be entirely confused when watching “Agatha All Along” as it provides a brief recap of Agatha’s fate at the end of “WandaVision,” ensuring you can follow the storyline from the get-go.

For those who’ve watched WandaVision, they’ll find delight in catching the numerous Easter Eggs and homages to the original show that are sprinkled throughout the sequel, enhancing their viewing pleasure. Moreover, having seen the original series will provide viewers with a deeper understanding of Agatha’s character and her intentions in the spinoff.

In the spinoff, we revisit Westview, where familiar faces from the WandaVision series appear. Viewers of the original show will readily identify these characters, while newcomers might find themselves puzzled about their roles in the narrative. However, lacking this background knowledge won’t detract from your enjoyment of the spinoff.

So, to sum everything up, it isn’t necessary to watch WandaVision before watching Agatha All Along. But if you have the time and want to watch the original series just because, be my guest. All nine episodes of the miniseries are streaming right now on Disney+. Agatha All Along episodes 1 and 2 are set to premiere on Disney+ on Sept. 18 at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET.
