DNC ratings thump Trump as 29 million TV viewers watch Harris' acceptance speech

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience in the industry, I’ve seen my fair share of performances that leave audiences spellbound – and Kamala Harris’ acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention was no exception. The energy, charisma, and raw emotion she displayed were reminiscent of a blockbuster drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The vigor behind Vice President Kamala Harris’ potential presidential bid boosted the viewership of the Democratic National Convention, surpassing the ratings for the Republican events supporting ex-President Trump.

According to Nielsen’s findings, a total of 29 million people tuned in to watch Harris deliver her acclaimed acceptance speech on 15 different television networks.

14% more people watched Kamala Harris’s speech compared to Trump’s, which had 25.4 million viewers on July 19. Her speech garnered significantly more viewers than the 24.6 million who watched Joe Biden’s acceptance speech at the 2020 convention and almost the same number as the 29.8 million who tuned in to Hillary Clinton’s speech in 2016.

1) Harris shortened her talk to 37 minutes, which benefited her. On the other hand, Trump’s over 90-minute speech continued late into the night on the East Coast.

The speech caps a successful week for the Democratic National Convention, which topped the audience for the GOP’s gathering every night this week.

Following President Biden’s decision to forgo a second term on July 21, Harris rose to the forefront of the election ticket, marking one of the most unexpected political turns in U.S. politics. This sudden change has reinvigorated Democratic voters who had initially been disheartened by the prospect of another 2020 campaign rematch.

As a passionate moviegoer, let me share that I recently took the stage to reconnect with all of you, focusing heavily on my personal journey and my role as a prosecutor in sunny California.

It’s possible that Harris benefited from unfounded gossip suggesting that music legends like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift might appear live at the event held at the United Center in Chicago.

Several network anchors echoed the claims made by TMZ’s report on Beyoncé, which they presented as facts. (or) Multiple network anchors reiterated the claims from TMZ about Beyoncé, stating them as truths. (or) The assertions made by TMZ concerning Beyoncé were repeated by several network anchors, who stated them as verifiable information.

In simpler terms, the Harris campaign could be boosted by the fact that her speech performed better than Trump’s in several key cities within the states that will decide the election according to the Electoral College system.

In comparison to Trump, Harris drew approximately 50% more viewers in Philadelphia, 36% more in Detroit, 31% more in Raleigh, North Carolina, and 21% more in Atlanta, as per Nielsen’s data.

In Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention took place, Harris’s performance lagged behind Trump’s by 10%.

MSNBC, often favored by liberal viewers, recorded its highest viewership during a Democratic convention yet, with an average of 6 million viewers on Thursday and approximately 5.2 million viewers across four nights.

Last week, CNN ranked second among all networks with approximately 3.6 million viewers. ABC was close behind with around 3.3 million viewers, followed by NBC with about 2.5 million, CBS with around 2.2 million, and Fox News with roughly 2.4 million viewers.

MSNBC managed to secure the largest viewership among people aged 25 to 54, a demographic highly sought after by advertisers, surpassing CNN by approximately 10,000 viewers in this specific age group for the very first time.

CNN had won the demographic audience segment by much wider margins in 2016 and 2020.

Fox News, known for its conservative and pro-Trump perspective, significantly increased the number of Democratic politicians they invited this year, by a factor of four compared to 2016. However, it’s important to note that Fox News has not traditionally been a go-to platform for Democratic conventions.

Following Harris’s speech, Trump phoned Fox News to voice his disapproval. On multiple occasions, he typed messages angrily while talking to hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.

Fox News significantly outpaced other networks during the Republican convention, boasting an average of 6.6 million viewers across the four-night event and peaking at 9.8 million viewers for the closing session.

Harris’ speech was probably watched by millions more people on streaming platforms.

On Thursday, Fox Corporation’s LiveNOW platform, which offers live news videos without commentary as an ad-supported free streaming service, reached a peak of 117,000 simultaneous viewers. Throughout the week, it maintained an average of 75,000 viewers, largely due to its continuous coverage of conventions.

CNN does not reveal data for its live stream on parent company Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max platform. But the network said the four days of the convention rank in the top 10 in daily usage since the service was launched last fall.
