DJ Unk’s cause of death confirmed by wife after ‘Walk It Out’ rapper dies at 43

Rapper DJ Unk, who was best known for the bouncy early-2000s crunk hit “Walk It Out,” has died.

On a tragic note, DJ Unk’s wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, shared the news of his passing on Facebook this morning. In her post, she expressed, “I have lost my husband, and our children have lost their father. Our life will never be the same.” DJ Unk, who was known professionally as Anthony Leonard Platt, passed away at the age of 43.

“I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER,” Long-Platt wrote.

I can confirm, as a follower, that I received news yesterday from Long-Platt, stating that Platt passed away peacefully in his sleep following a heart attack. Let me clarify any misunderstandings – drug usage was not the cause of this tragic event for the talented artist behind “2 Step” and “Show Out.

On August 11 marking the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, The Times reflects upon the groundbreaking artists, tunes, and advancements that reshaped the landscape of mainstream music and culture.

Big Oomp Records, Atlanta-based label that signed Platt in 2000, shared on Instagram over the weekend that the artist was more than just a renowned DJ, rapper, and producer; he was a pivotal stone of our label whose influence will be revered eternally.

Born and raised in Atlanta, Platt kicked off his music journey in the late 1990s, working alongside DJ Montay and DJ Jelly as part of Southern Style DJs. Together, they played their tunes at numerous community gatherings across Georgia. Later on, Platt joined Big Oomp and unveiled his first single, “Walk It Out,” in 2006. That very year also saw the release of his initial album, “Beat’n Down Yo Block.

Besides being recognized for his 2006 hit “2 Step” and having released three albums throughout his career, it was “Walk It Out” that truly solidified Platt’s fame. This song skyrocketed on various Billboard charts and even received a remix featuring OutKast and Jim Jones. The single not only made waves in the music industry but also transcended its boundaries. In a 2023 interview with Billboard, Platt himself acknowledged that listeners have been using his 2006 chart-topper for workout routines, religious gatherings, and various other purposes.

Musician Rich Homie Quan, popular for tracks like ‘Lifestyle’ and ‘Type of Way’, as well as collaborations with artists such as Young Thug, tragically passed away at the age of 33. This news has been verified by The Times.

According to Long-Platt’s Instagram post, the rapper was her “world,” as she put it. Over the weekend, she published a collection of videos on her account, which included images of Platt performing and moments spent with his family, all set to Monica’s song “Love All Over Me.

A crowd of many townspeople assembled in a downtown Atlanta park on Sunday evening for a candlelight tribute dedicated to Platt. As per videos posted on Facebook, those present released white and blue balloons upwards while expressing their affection for the deceased rapper. Some attendees joined in singing DJ Unk’s “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” while others shared warm embraces.
