DJ Joel Corry reveals details of his first meeting with Liam Payne after learning of the One Direction singer’s shock death on Aussie radio show
As a longtime observer of the music industry, I’ve seen its highs and lows, its triumphs and tragedies. The untimely death of Liam Payne is a stark reminder of the human cost behind the glitz and glamour.
DJ Joel Corry recently shared his experience of encountering Liam Payne for the first time, mere moments following the unexpected announcement of the One Direction member’s passing on an Australian radio station.
A previous member of the band One Direction succumbed to fatal injuries, such as a fractured skull, shortly after falling 45 feet from a balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires.
Yesterday afternoon, a 31-year-old celebrity fell from the third story of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Medical professionals later declared him deceased.
Just moments before English producer Joel, aged 35, was set to be on the Kyle and Jackie O show on a Thursday, word spread about the singer’s demise, leaving Joel utterly stunned.
‘I just heard, I’m in shock,’ he told KIIS FM radio host Jackie O Henderson.
After that, the musician known for blending intellect and emotion narrated his initial encounter with Liam, which took place during the charity football game Soccer Aid in the year 2023.
‘I played Soccer Aid with him, which is like a charity football match in the UK,’ Joel revealed.
He mentioned that they became acquainted because they were teammates, recalling Liam as a genuinely kind individual in a touching tribute.
He mentioned that we had spent a few days together since he was engaging with me, and it turned out to be our initial encounter with each other.
He brought joy to our journey, making it an enjoyable experience for all of us. We spent quality time with him, and his pleasant demeanor made him a delightful companion.
After hearing about Liam’s passing, Joel expressed his disbelief and shock by saying, “When I got the news a moment ago, it left me speechless. It felt as though someone had knocked the wind out of me. I reacted with a gasp, thinking, ‘Oh my goodness!’
Soccer Aid is an annual charity event that has raised more than £106million in aid of UNICEF UK.
I’m excited to share that I’ll be attending an engaging football match featuring two stellar teams – England and the Soccer Aid World XI. It promises to be a showcase of exceptional skill and camaraderie.
In 2023, Joel and Liam were part of the England team with stars like Asa Butterfield and Tom Hiddleston, as well as renowned athlete Mo Farah.
In honor of Liam, Joel shared insights about the stresses within the music world and how this unfortunate event further strengthened his resolve to keep ‘honorable individuals’ around him.
‘There’s a lot of pressure in the music industry,’ he said.
Working in this field can be incredibly demanding, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s why having supportive, down-to-earth individuals by your side becomes crucial – they help maintain a sense of balance.
‘And I know that, Liam, there was a lot of ups and downs on his journey, and this news is just shocking. And honestly, I send love to his family and everyone.’

- Payne shared a photo with his girlfriend on Snapchat minutes before his death;
- Fans looked back at Payne’s ‘extraordinary’ X Factor audition in 2008 aged 14;
- Pictures revealed rooms inside the hotel where Payne plunged to his death; and
- Harry Styles’s mother Anne Twist shared her grief with a tribute on Instagram.
Liam reportedly fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos, Argentina, on Wednesday around 5pm (ART).
A crowd of emotional fans have since come together to pay their respects to the pop star outside the hotel.
Police in Buenos Aires said they were initially responding to a 911 call ‘of an aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol’.
According to the BBC report, officials noticed a loud noise coming from the courtyard around 5 pm, and upon investigation, they found his body shortly thereafter.
As reported by TMZ, Liam was exhibiting unusual behavior in the hotel lobby and ended up shattering his laptop. Later on, he needed assistance to return to his room.
A call for immediate assistance concerning a drunken hotel guest was made to the police, as reported by audio connected to the case from the Buenos Aires security ministry, which was said by a worker at the hotel.
The worker stated, “When he’s awake, he’s wrecking the entire room, so we urgently need someone sent.
Spokesperson for the city’s ambulance services, Alberto Crescenti, reported that Liam had fallen approximately 40 meters, resulting in injuries so severe they proved fatal.
At precisely 5:04 PM, my heart leaped as I heard the news: “A person has been found in an enclosed courtyard at Casa Sur!” The anticipation was palpable, and I couldn’t help but feel a thrill of excitement as if this were some secret clue to an unsolved mystery.
‘At 5.11pm an ambulance arrived and the man was certified dead.
Later on, we discovered that he was a renowned musician. Regrettably, the injuries from his fall ultimately led to his death, and there was no chance for reviving him.
In May, Liam shared his last social media update, featuring a picture of One Direction alongside the late movie director Morgan Spurlock – who passed away on May 23rd. He expressed gratitude towards Mr. Spurlock for having directed the One Direction documentary titled “This Is Us.
The star’s loyal fan base had raised their concerns for the troubled star, following a series of concerning displays including an erratic red carpet appearance, shock hospitalisation, cancelled gigs and rambling videos.
