Divisive House of the Dragon finale gets season-high ratings, if slightly below season 1

As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher of all things fantastical, I must admit that the second season finale of House of the Dragon left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, it was heartening to see such impressive viewership numbers – 8.9 million overnight viewers across HBO and Max is nothing to sneeze at!

The final episode of the second season of House of the Dragon, titled “The Queen Who Ever Was,” aired last Sunday. I can’t deny that I was a bit disappointed by the finale, as it didn’t quite live up to the promising storyline the series had been developing and featured some unexpected character shifts. However, I hope the show continues to succeed, so I’m pleased to share that the episode drew in 8.9 million viewers in one night on both HBO and Max. As reported by Variety, this is a record for the season, an increase of 14% from the number of viewers who watched the season premiere.

Following a two-year break between seasons 1 and 2, it appears that a larger number of viewers have joined the House of the Dragon audience as fresh episodes were rolled out, which is an encouraging trend. Notably, the finale was part of Max’s record-breaking streaming day, indicating that more people are choosing to watch HBO shows on Max rather than tuning in directly on HBO itself.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but share my thoughts about “The Queen Who Ever Was.” Despite its captivating finale in season 1, “The Black Queen,” which attracted an impressive 9.3 million viewers, the latest season 2 finale didn’t quite live up to the hype. Honestly, I’m a bit concerned about the enthusiasm that will sustain fans during this extended break between seasons.

Let’s stop worrying and get excited about the remaining chapters in the Tale of the Dance of the Dragons, can’t wait to see how it unfolds on screen! Although House of the Dragon won’t be back for a couple of years yet, we’ll revisit Westeros before that with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a new series set in between the timelines of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. This show is based on George R.R. Martin’s captivating Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. HBO recently showed a brief glimpse of footage for it in their latest promotional video.

So fans will be eating well for the foreseeable future.
