The Irish crime drama The Vanishings, featuring India Mullen and Allen Leech, is now the most popular show on a UK streaming service. While based on a real-life case, the series has received mixed reactions from viewers since its release.
I’m really excited about this new six-part crime drama! It originally came out in 2023 under the name The Vanishing Triangle. It follows an investigative journalist, Lisa Wallace, and a detective, David Burkely, as they try to solve a string of murders happening in Ireland. I can’t wait to see them work together!
This series tells the story of Ireland’s Vanishing Triangle – a string of disappearances and murders that occurred in the Leinster area during the 1980s and 1990s. Many of these cases are still mysteries today.

I’m so excited to see The Vanishings doing so well! It was created by Ivan Kavanagh and directed by Imogen Murphy, and it actually premiered on Channel 5 last year. Now it’s really taking off on the streamer – it’s currently number one, even beating out shows like Rich House Poor House and The Curfew! It’s great to see such a cool show get the attention it deserves.
Although the crime drama is now popular with viewers, critics had mixed reactions when it first came out, with some objecting to the way it changed real historical events for the sake of the story.

The Irish Independent criticized the film for exploiting real-life trauma and tragedy in a poorly made, shallow thriller, calling it deeply unpleasant. The Telegraph simply described it as “tasteless” and “horribly inappropriate.”
Honestly, I was shocked by how strongly The i came out against it. They called it a really tasteless and exploitative mystery, saying it basically turns real people’s pain into something comfortable for viewers. They even said it was disrespectful to the victims and their families, and I have to agree – it felt really wrong.
Despite some criticism, the Daily Mail acknowledged the show was engaging, stating that it would be even better if it stuck more closely to the true story, but that it still managed to hold their attention.

Currently, the series has a rating of 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb, based on over 2300 user reviews. One viewer described it as a captivating and intense thriller that offers a glimpse into a troubled and unsettling recent history, filled with flawed characters and systems.
One viewer said the show began promisingly but quickly became slow and less engaging. Instead of focusing on a good central mystery, it spent too much time on the detective, David, and his personal issues.
The Vanishings is streaming now on 5.
