The new I Know What You Did Last Summer, coming in 2025, continues the story from the 1997 and 1998 films of the same name. It will be available to stream on Netflix around Halloween. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who’s known for the Netflix dark comedy Do Revenge, this I Know What You Did Last Summer takes place 27 years after the original movie. The story follows a fresh group of young adults who are hunted by a mysterious killer after sharing a troubling secret. The film brings back original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prince Jr., and introduces new faces like The Studio’s Chase Sui Wonders, Doctor Who’s Jonah Hauer-King, Him’s Tyriq Withers, Tiny Beautiful Thing’s Sarah Pidgeon, and The Map that Leads to You’s Madelyn Cline.
I Know What You Did Last Summer will be available to stream on Netflix beginning Oct. 16, 2025, according to What’s On Netflix. After streaming on Netflix for a year and a half, the movie will move to Disney+ and Hulu in 2027, as part of an agreement between Sony Pictures and those streaming services. Viewers can also stream the original I Know What You Did Last Summer film and its sequel on Netflix, making all three movies accessible this Halloween.
‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Could Break Out on Netflix as a Halloween Hit
Sony Pictures
I Know What You Did Last Summer came out in theaters on July 18, 2025, and made $12.7 million during its first weekend. This put it in third place, following Superman and Jurassic World: Dominion, which were number one and number two, respectively. The film ultimately earned $32 million in the United States and $64 million around the world, with a production budget of $18 million. Critics generally didn’t like the movie, giving it a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, a few well-known critics offered somewhat positive feedback.
While I Know What You Did Last Summer wasn’t a massive success in theaters, many movies have found a new audience through streaming services. M3GAN 2.0 actually earned less money in theaters than I Know What You Did Last Summer, but it’s done well on Peacock since being released. Because Netflix has more subscribers than Peacock, this creates an opportunity for I Know What You Did Last Summer to reach a wider audience and possibly become a popular choice for viewers at home as Halloween approaches.
Because of their deal with Sony Pictures, Netflix has a lot of popular horror movies coming in 2025 for fans who want a frightful Halloween. Besides I Know What You Did Last Summer, Netflix is the only place you can stream 2025 releases like Heart Eyes, Until Dawn, and the highly-rated 28 Years Later. While Warner Bros. has been leading in horror films shown in theaters with titles such as Sinners, Weapons, Final Destination: Bloodlines and The Conjuring: Last Rites, Netflix being the most-used streaming service for many viewers gives I Know What You Did Last Summer another opportunity to become popular and might encourage Sony Pictures to make a sequel. After all, if Vin Diesel’s box office failure The Last Witch Hunter earned a sequel after doing well on Netflix, why not I Know What You Did Last Summer?
