‘Dispatches from the Occlusion Zone’ is the beginning of the end for The High Republic
As a seasoned Star Wars gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming comic series, “Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures Phase III – Dispatches from the Occlusion Zone.” Having survived countless battles against the Empire and the First Order, this new conflict between the Jedi and the Nihil promises to be another thrilling chapter in the Star Wars saga.
From January 2021 onwards, the Star Wars narrative during the High Republic era has primarily revolved around the continuous struggle between the Jedi and the Nihil. A forthcoming comic book series, launching its inaugural issue in October, will depict the decisive moves leading to their ultimate victory.
The four-part miniseries, titled “Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures Phase III – Messages from the Obliteration Region,” starts this October. Penned by Daniel José Older and illustrated by Paris Alleyne (initial cover art by Jake Bartok), the storyline follows Jedi Knights Keeve Trennis and Elzar Mann as they endeavor to connect with those who are trapped in the Obliteration Region.
The mini-series unfolds in an era known as Phase III of The High Republic, a time when the Nihil have seized control over the galaxy and left destruction in their wake, dismantling the Galactic Republic. The Nihil have constructed a formidable barrier, called Stormwall, to demarcate their territory, preventing any passage in or out.
The Occlusion Zone (the region concealed by the Stormwall) obstructs regular communication both ways, which means that individuals confined within the Stormwall’s boundaries are not only exposed to perils in Nihil space, but they also can’t reach out for assistance from those on the opposite side.

It’s fortunate that a number of Jedi and their contacts have found a way to use ancient communication technology, bridging the gap between individuals stuck within the Occlusion Zone and those located outside. The upcoming miniseries will delve into these communications and the tales of the people inside the Occlusion Zone as they struggle for survival.
This collection of stories, known as “The High Republic,” bridges the gap between tales already told during Phase III and those yet to come by mid-2025. The High Republic saga is planned to conclude around springtime in 2025 with Phase III.
Title #1 of “Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures Phase III – Messages from the Occlusion Zone” will become available on October 9, 2024.
