There’s no question which streaming service dominates fantasy TV at the moment, and Disney+’s new show—a blend of Wednesday and Enchanted—makes that even clearer. Enchanted, released by Disney in 2007, playfully parodied classic Disney fairytale movies. It was a clever, lighthearted story that flipped many familiar tropes. While Enchanted and Netflix’s Wednesday seem very different at first glance, there’s actually a surprising connection we’ll explore.
The Netflix series Wednesday is a fantasy show inspired by the famous Addams Family. Similar to the movie Enchanted, it playfully twists familiar elements of the original stories and genre, offering a fresh take on well-known themes. Wednesday focuses on Wednesday Addams’ experiences at a school for kids with supernatural abilities, and this concept shares similarities with Disney’s upcoming Ella Enchanted series.
Although both are called Ella Enchanted and Enchanted, the two stories aren’t connected at all. The 2004 movie Ella Enchanted starred Anne Hathaway and was based on a 1997 book by Gail Carson Levine. Hathaway is now helping to create a TV show based on Ella Enchanted that will reimagine the story and be a more accurate adaptation of Levine’s book. The show will follow Ella, who, like Cinderella, is cursed with the ‘gift’ of having to obey any order, but this time the story will unfold at a boarding school – similar to the show Wednesday. It’s a promising concept that could add another successful fantasy series to Disney’s lineup.
Disney Is Rapidly Becoming The New Home Of Fantasy Shows On Streaming
The first Ella Enchanted movie wasn’t actually made by Disney, but by Miramax, which Disney now owns. That’s why the new Ella Enchanted TV show will be available on Disney+. It will be part of a growing collection of fantasy series on the platform, including shows based on popular movies and franchises – both Disney properties and others.
Disney+’s Percy Jackson series has been a success, bringing the popular books by Rick Riordan to life on screen. The show, which began in 2025, is a significant improvement over the Percy Jackson movies released by 20th Century Fox in 2010 and 2013. Disney acquired the rights to the series when it purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, allowing for a more accurate adaptation and strengthening Disney’s position in the fantasy genre.
Besides the already announced Percy Jackson and the new Ella Enchanted show, Disney is developing a Casper the Friendly Ghost series. This version will be different from past Casper shows, aiming for a more mature and dramatic feel, similar to Wednesday. This is part of Disney’s broader strategy to become a leader in fantasy television, and if audiences respond well, it could be very successful.
Does Ella Enchanted Really Need A 2020s Remake?
With the popularity of shows like Wednesday, it’s not surprising Disney is considering a darker take on Casper and a more accurate TV adaptation of Ella Enchanted. Clearly, there’s strong interest in both reviving established franchises and stories set in magical schools. But with so many reboots and remakes happening, a key question arises: do we really need all of these?
Whether a new TV or movie project is successful really comes down to what it adds to the original story. The new Percy Jackson series on Disney+ aims to correct the mistakes of the previous films and stay true to the books. Like Wednesday, a new Casper project could appeal to horror fans who first discovered the genre through the original. And a TV show based on Ella Enchanted could both faithfully adapt the book and tap into the fond memories people have of the 2007 movie.
It remains to be seen if the new Ella Enchanted TV show will be as successful as its predecessors. However, given Disney’s impressive track record with fantasy, there’s good reason to be optimistic.
