Most Disney fans remember the Disney Renaissance – a hugely successful period for the studio from 1989 to 1999. But there’s also been a more recent surge in quality, often called the Disney Revival, that started around 2009 with the film *The Princess and the Frog*. This trend continued with films like *Tangled* in 2010, which is now finding a new audience on streaming platforms.
Disney’s *Tangled* is unexpectedly back in the top 10 most-watched movies on streaming platforms in multiple countries, according to FlixPatrol. This is notable because the 2010 film hasn’t been a recent topic of conversation, which usually drives a surge in viewers. As the movie nears its 15th anniversary—either November 14th or 24th, depending on how Disney chooses to mark the occasion—it’s seeing a renewed boost in popularity.
Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, *Tangled* is a Disney movie inspired by the classic story of Rapunzel. It follows Rapunzel, a princess with incredibly long, magical blonde hair, and Flynn Rider, a charming thief. After years locked away in a tower, Rapunzel ventures out into the world with Flynn, while trying to avoid the clutches of the manipulative Mother Gothel. Despite costing a substantial $260 million to produce – making it one of the priciest animated films ever made – *Tangled* was a hit with audiences, earning over $590 million globally. Critics also praised the movie, with 89% giving it a positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Is a Live-Action Tangled Remake in the Works?
After the huge success of the 2010 animated film *Tangled*, Disney created a variety of follow-up projects, including a short film, a stage show, a video game, and a three-season animated TV series that continued Rapunzel and Flynn Rider’s story. Now, it seems the next logical move is a live-action remake. Last year, Disney announced that Michael Gracey (*Better Man*) and Jennifer Kayton Robinson (*Thor: Love and Thunder*) will be directing and writing the remake, which is described as a modern take on the original animated film.
Despite initial excitement, the film performed poorly in theaters and received harsh reviews. This led to reports that the studio was temporarily halting production on all its planned live-action remakes, including projects like *Tangled*, *The Princess and the Frog*, and *Hercules*. While that was the situation recently, the studio likely realized this past summer that live-action remakes can still be profitable.
Until the fate of the live-action remake is revealed, fans can stream Tangled on Disney+.
