Disney’s ‘live-action’ Stitch revealed from summer 2025 remake

As someone who has grown up with the magic of Disney animations, I must say that the announcement of the live-action remake of one of my all-time favorites, Lilo & Stitch, has filled me with both excitement and apprehension. Having visited Kauai myself, where the enchanting world of Lilo & Stitch was brought to life, I can attest to the fact that this island truly embodies the spirit of the movie. The idea of a live-action adaptation is intriguing, especially with Dean Fleischer Camp at the helm.

During my recent trip to Kauai, Hawaii, I discovered some fascinating facts: The island managed to remain independent from King Kamehameha’s unification efforts; roaming chickens are abundant and seemingly omnipresent; and Stitch from the movie Lilo & Stitch serves as a beloved emblem of the region. This adorable extraterrestrial can be found across various establishments, from souvenir shops to ice cream parlors, demonstrating not only the enduring appeal of his design but also the film’s authentic portrayal of life in Kauai. I must say, Lilo & Stitch is simply enchanting! It could easily be compared to a Studio Ghibli production.

Clearly, Disney is planning to transform the 2002 film into a live-action adaptation. Initially announced in 2018, this project has seen its fair share of directorial and cast changes as it progressed towards completion. Last year, Dean Fleischer Camp (known for his work on Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) started filming. At Disney’s D23 Expo over the weekend, they unveiled a sneak peek at this long-awaited production. Originally intended for exclusive streaming on Disney Plus, it has now been decided that it will open in cinemas next summer. The pressure is on (as those on Kauai can attest to).

As a longtime Disney fan who grew up watching Lilo and Stitch, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming live-action remake of this classic animated movie! With memories of cuddling up to watch the original as a child, I can’t wait to experience the magic all over again in a whole new way. The summer of 2025 will surely be an unforgettable one for me and many others who share my love for Lilo, Stitch, and their Hawaiian adventures!

Many people aren’t fond of the concept of a remake. In a 2020 discussion at the Annecy International Animation Festival, Lilo & Stitch co-director Dean DeBlois expressed that he wasn’t entirely clear on the purpose of remaking something so intimately tied to his co-director Chris Sanders’ vision.

“Lilo & Stitch was incredibly unique, a one-of-a-kind creation brought to life by Chris’ unique perspective. At the panel, DeBlois shared that it began as his personal children’s story. Since it’s so specific and personal, the thought of another team remaking it without Chris or any of the original team involved seems almost absurd. It’s not a timeless classic like Cinderella or a well-known fairy tale, nor is it a piece of folklore. Instead, it’s as individual and distinctive as can be.”

As someone who grew up watching Disney animations and adoring the enchanting world of Lilo & Stitch, I am thrilled to hear that Fleischer Camp, a reputable filmmaker, is bringing this beloved story to live-action. Having been captivated by the original movie as a child, it brings me immense joy to think that the heart of the story may be rekindled once more on the big screen next summer. I can’t wait to see how this classic tale will come alive in a new way and share the magic with my own children someday.
