Disney’s ‘Lilo & Stitch’ becomes Hollywood’s first $1-billion movie of 2025
The live-action remake by Walt Disney Company titled “Lilo & Stitch” has surpassed a global box office income of over $1 billion, making it the initial U.S. movie of the year to achieve this milestone in earnings.
The film, which shares its name with a 2002 animated movie, earned a total of $1.0 billion worldwide, with $416.2 million coming from U.S. and Canadian box offices, and an extra $584.8 million from international audiences. In Mexico, it became Disney’s highest-earning live-action film, raking in a substantial $67 million at the local box office.
Despite the global adoration for ‘Lilo & Stitch’, we always remain humble about it. We’re thrilled to see that this latest movie has resonated with people, making us proud.
The company in Burbank, known for its work in media and entertainment, has revealed that they are currently working on a follow-up to the movie “Lilo & Stitch.
On May 23rd, the film had an impressive debut, earning $183 million in U.S. theaters during its first weekend. This surpassed the earnings of “Top Gun: Maverick” from 2022, making it the movie with the highest opening weekend gross for any Memorial Day release to date.

Initially, the original “Lilo & Stitch” animated film earned approximately $273 million during its theater release in 2002. However, Stitch’s charm has endured over time, boosting sales of related products and even leading to a fresh live-action adaptation.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I recall the initial release of the animated film wasn’t exactly a blockbuster, earning around $273 million at the box office. However, over the years, Stitch’s popularity has skyrocketed, placing him among the top-performing Disney franchises. This esteemed company includes legendary figures such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, the princesses, Star Wars, and Marvel. According to Disney, this is quite an achievement!
Last year, approximately $2.6 billion worth of merchandise related to Stitch was sold. Interestingly, before the latest film’s release, the Lilo & Stitch franchise – encompassing animated series, TV films, and direct-to-video movies – garnered a staggering 546 million hours of global viewership on Disney+. The original movie alone contributed to over half of this viewership time.
In his statement made in May, Bergman confirmed that the success and appeal of the little blue extraterrestrial character undeniably contributed to the decision to produce the live-action movie.
The triumph of “Lilo & Stitch” follows a trend where family-friendly films have been dominating the box office. This trend started in April with Warner Bros. Pictures’ “A Minecraft Movie,” which has earned an impressive $955 million worldwide, and was followed by “Lilo & Stitch” and Universal Pictures’ live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon,” both released in June and raking in over $564 million collectively across the globe.
Recently, the Disney film ‘Lilo & Stitch’ joined an exclusive club by earning over $1 billion worldwide. Last year, other films such as ‘Inside Out 2’ from Disney and Pixar, ‘Moana 2’ from Walt Disney Animation, and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ from Marvel Studios also surpassed the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales.
Worldwide, “Ne Zha 2,” a powerful Chinese animated movie, continues to hold the title for the highest-grossing film of the year. With box office earnings surpassing $2 billion globally, an overwhelming majority of this revenue was generated within its native China.
