Disney’s divisive Snow White remake confirms earlier Disney+ release date than expected

Disney’s controversial remake of “Snow White” will become accessible for streaming ahead of schedule following the announcement of its official release date on Disney+.

The movie, a modern adaptation of the timeless 1937 animated version, features Rachel Zegler as the main character – a princess who manages to live through an attempted assassination and embarks on a mission to retake her kingdom from the grasp of the wicked Queen (Gal Gadot).

Although the musical-fantasy directed by Marc Webb premiered in cinemas just last March, it’s been confirmed that the movie will be streaming on Disney+ as early as June 11th. The news was announced less than three months following its theatrical debut.

It’s rather unexpected that Disney would make a quick move, as they typically add their films to the streaming service about three months after their cinematic debut. We had anticipated that “Snow White” would become accessible on Disney+ in late June or early July, but the corporation has accelerated its plans instead.

Release occurred prematurely possibly because of underwhelming critical and financial success. The movie was deemed a flop at the box office following earnings of only $205 million, while its estimated production cost ranged between $240-270 million.

The movie received both positive and negative feedback from critics, as indicated by its 40% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 258 reviews. Conversely, it seemed to resonate more with audiences, earning a commendable 71% score from over 2500 ratings.

Although Zegler’s acting received high acclaim, the movie, similar to several other Disney live-action adaptations, faced criticism due to its inability to capture the enchantment of the initial version. The excessive reliance on computer-generated imagery was often a subject of debate.

In our critique of the movie, we pointed out: “The dwarves in this film are computer-generated characters that fail to move beyond the ‘uncanny valley’ problem… The excessive use of computer graphics also characterizes the overall aesthetic of the film.

Although the movie employed realistic backdrops, the overly bright ‘magic hour’ style dimmed not only the environment but also the striking costumes by Sandy Powell, as they lost their vibrancy. Furthermore, we found that the film wasn’t daring or innovative enough to warrant its own existence.

Snow White will stream on Disney+ from 11 June.
