Disney’s D23 Snow White trailer unveils Rachel Zegler’s updated princess
As a lifelong Disney enthusiast who has witnessed the magical transformations of timeless classics over the years, I must say that I am both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming remake of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 2025. The trailer for this film showcases the incredible talent of Rachel Zegler, and I have no doubt she will bring a fresh and captivating take on the classic role.
Following some challenging periods, Disney is now prepared to entertain audiences once more by releasing sequels, re-imaginings, and its signature live-action adaptations starting from 2025. In this year, director Marc Webb (known for movies like 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man) will attempt to retell a significant chapter in history when his remake of the classic tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, based on the first-ever animated feature film produced in the US, hits theaters. The teaser for this movie was unveiled at the 2024 D23 Expo on Friday, offering a glimpse of what actress Rachel Zegler brings to the iconic character.
Written by Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”) and Erin Cressida Wilson (“Secretary”), the upcoming film “Snow White” seeks to modernize the 1937 classic while preserving its distinctive imagery. Rachel Zegler, discovered by Steven Spielberg for his remake of “West Side Story” and showcasing her on-screen singing talents again in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”, takes the lead role in this musical production, and yes, she will indeed sing. The film is anticipated to feature a blend of classic tunes like “Whistle While You Work” along with new songs from duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who are famed for their work on “Dear Evan Hansen” and the Hugh Jackman musical. Gal Gadot will reportedly challenge Zegler as the Evil Queen, although it remains uncertain if she’ll join in the singing.
In the upcoming movie, the seven classic dwarfs – Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy – will make an appearance. However, they’ll be brought to life using computer animation to align with the original film’s design. This decision has sparked some controversy. Back in 2022 when the production started, Peter Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, expressed concerns on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast about what he perceived as perpetuating stereotypes.
In a different wording, “You persist in telling that old tale about the seven dwarfs residing in a cave. It seems you haven’t heeded my efforts to progress the narrative from my platform. I wonder if I’m not speaking loudly enough.” This is said by Dinklage to Maron.
Disney responded by saying that to prevent perpetuating stereotypes from the initial animated movie, they’re adopting a unique approach for these seven characters. They’ve been collaborating with people from the dwarfism community and are eager to reveal more details as the film moves into production following an extended development phase.
The movie has arrived, with Disney anticipating its enchantment under the Disney spell. Let’s wait and see if Webb can deliver when Snow White premieres in cinemas on March 21, 2025.
