Disney’s successful 2025 sci-fi action movie, which grossed $184 million, deserves a follow-up and continues a franchise that had been dormant for decades. Disney has been reviving older franchises, especially after acquiring 20th Century Fox, and is now a major hub for these properties.
Franchises like Alien (with its new film Alien: Romulus) and Planet of the Apes (with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) returned to theaters. In 2025, Disney also brought Predator back to the big screen after releasing two movies directly on Hulu, and the result was a standout entry in the series.

Beginning with the 2022 film Prey, director Dan Trachtenberg has been key to bringing the Predator franchise back to life. He’s also involved with Hulu’s Predator: Killer of Killers and the recently released Predator: Badlands, which has received positive reviews. Badlands centers on Dek, a Yautja outcast, who hunts a seemingly invincible creature in an attempt to regain his honor within his clan.
The movie was a financial success, earning $184.5 million in theaters on a $105 million budget. It also performed very well when released for home viewing, quickly becoming popular on streaming and rental platforms as Predator: Badlands. This success demonstrates the film’s importance in bringing the Predator franchise back to life and suggests exciting possibilities for future installments.
Predator: Badlands’ Ending Set Up A Sequel
Predator: Badlands offered a fresh take on the Predator series. Unlike earlier films, it received a PG-13 rating, largely because the story focused more on the Yautja hunter than on human characters. This unique approach creates a standalone story within the Predator universe, and leaves room for potential sequels.
The story of Predator: Badlands concludes with Dek defeating his father and hints that his mother could be a villain in a future installment. Meanwhile, Thia, Dek’s synthetic companion, is now a target for the Weyland-Yutani company’s advanced AI program. This sets the stage for another galactic adventure as Dek and Thia continue to work together.
Predator: Badlands 2 Is Not The Only Way To Bring Dek Back
The Predator films have shown they aren’t limited to simple sequels. The ending of Predator: Killer of Killers, which includes Naru from Prey aboard a Yautja ship, suggests characters can show up in different parts of the Predator universe. This opens the door for Dek to reappear in an animated project, or even have his story continued in a completely separate film.
Disney seems to be hinting at a potential new Alien vs. Predator movie, especially with the inclusion of the Weyland-Yutani corporation in Predator: Badlands. Considering Dek’s connection to the recent Alien films, he might also be featured in a crossover. Regardless, the movie’s popularity shows there’s a demand for a sequel to continue the story of this young Predator.
