Disneyland’s Major Star Wars Change Was Set Up Before Galaxy’s Edge Even Opened

Okay, so Disneyland’s Galaxy’s Edge is about to get a big shake-up, and it’s got fans talking! For years, the land has been totally focused on the sequel trilogy – specifically, one single day within that timeframe. Now, it looks like they’re expanding to include characters and elements from the original Star Wars trilogy, which is a pretty significant shift and a welcome one, if you ask me. It’ll be interesting to see how they blend these different eras together!

This new development isn’t a surprise. In fact, Lucasfilm has been subtly preparing for it for years. The planet Batuu, featured in Galaxy’s Edge, has been part of the official Star Wars story across different time periods since the beginning.

Original Trilogy Characters Have Been Connected To Galaxy’s Edge Since The Beginning

The addition of characters from the original Star Wars trilogy to Galaxy’s Edge actually fits well with the established storyline. A novel released a year before the land opened, called Thrawn: Alliances, revealed that Anakin Skywalker and Grand Admiral Thrawn both visited the planet Batuu – once during the Clone Wars and again after Anakin turned into Darth Vader, before the events of the original trilogy.

The damage to the walls of Oga’s Cantina—specifically, the blaster marks—officially happened during a fight between Darth Vader, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and a band of criminals called the Darshi.

Marvel Comics also published a story establishing that Han Solo and Chewbacca once transported the young Sarlacc creature now living in Dok-Ondar’s shop. This, along with many other details connected to different eras in Star Wars history, confirms that within the theme parks, the planet Batuu has always been part of the sequel trilogy storyline.

Recently, Galaxy’s Edge has been adding more characters from the Star Wars universe, like Luke Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, and Din Djarin with Grogu, to create new experiences for visitors.

Overall, the changes coming seem to be adding to the existing story rather than completely rewriting it. For example, we’re going to see Leia Organa and Han Solo wearing outfits inspired by their appearances in comics and other sources from the New Republic era.

To maintain the look and feel of Batuu as fans remember it from the original Star Wars trilogy – especially the time period featuring Darth Vader and classic stormtroopers – some small changes are being made to the land. Instead of completely overhauling Batuu, Disneyland is subtly expanding the timeframe represented, letting different moments from Star Wars history exist side-by-side.

New Star Wars Stories Will Expand Galaxy’s Edge Even Further

As if Galaxy’s Edge wasn’t already packed with backstory, get this – next month they’re dropping a new comic series called Echoes of the Empire. It’s a limited run, but it’s going to really flesh out what Luke, Leia, and Han were up to on Batuu, and basically make their connection to the land even more official. As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m all about digging deeper into that era, and this seems like it’ll add a lot!

The decision to feature different time periods within Galaxy’s Edge is brilliant and likely should have happened sooner. Adding these layers makes the land feel more vibrant, realistic, and appealing to a wider range of Star Wars enthusiasts.

Disneyland will be updating Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with new features starting in late April.
