Disneyland workers ratify contract that averted strike

As a long-time Disneyland employee, I have witnessed the highs and lows of working at the “happiest place on Earth.” For months, we have fought tirelessly for fair wages, better working conditions, and the recognition that we deserve as magic makers who bring joy to millions of visitors each year. The recent ratification of new contracts is a significant victory for us, one that secures historic raises, improved minimum wage, and more flexible policies that will directly benefit our lives and those of our families.

Harmony has been restored to the “happiest place on Earth.”

As a film enthusiast and Disneyland fan, I was thrilled to learn that over Thousands of us, the dedicated workforce behind the magic, came together on Monday to approve an agreement that prevented what could have been Disneyland’s first strike in forty years. And it wasn’t just those at Disneyland itself; employees from Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and even the Disneyland Resort hotels joined in this significant decision. Together, we voted to ratify new contracts with our esteemed employer.

The union bargaining committee declared in a statement that Disney employees, by approving these agreements, will receive significant wage increases and benefits, along with safeguards that acknowledge their essential part as creators of magic within the Disney theme parks.

Over several months, dedicated Disney cast members united their efforts both at negotiation tables and in local parks, advocating for the recognition of their significant contributions to the magical theme park experience. The agreements reached are tangible proof of their unyielding commitment and labor.

Last week, the Master Services Council, which is made up of over 14,000 labor unions representing Disneyland Resort employees, and The Walt Disney Company came to preliminary agreements on contracts. This occurred not long after Disneyland workers held a vote in favor of striking with impressive approval.

Based on the Master Services Council’s report, these three-year contracts include hourly wage increases of $6.10 in total, a minimum wage hike to $24 in 2024, extra compensation for senior staff, and a more adaptable attendance policy for Disneyland’s custodians, ride operators, candy makers, merchandise clerks, and other essential employees.

As a long-time supporter of labor unions and their efforts to protect workers’ rights, I was dismayed to learn about the recent escalation of tensions between Disney and the Master Services Council. I’ve seen firsthand how important it is for employees to have a voice in their workplace and the ability to stand up against unfair treatment.

1) Unions claim that donning Mickey Mouse’s raised fist buttons symbolizes permitted collective action among employees, while the company asserts these pins breach the workplace attire policy. Disney has stated that only a few recurring instances triggered disciplinary measures, beginning with a verbal reprimand.

At Disneyland Resort, the staff members’ collective use of the buttons during negotiations for new contracts with The Walt Disney Company, which began in late April, served as a powerful representation of their unity.

The Disneyland worker’s contract ended on June 16th. While the agreements for Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney were set to finish on Sept. 30.)

Unitedly, through putting on badges, participating in gatherings, and sharing their experiences with the audience, the actors struggled for a brighter tomorrow not only for themselves but also for their colleagues and loved ones, as expressed by the union’s negotiating team.

“Disney’s new contracts mark a significant milestone for our employees, bringing about positive changes in their lives that make us proud.”
