Disney World Saves Muppet*Vision (at least we hope they will)

As a lifelong Disney enthusiast and self-proclaimed Muppet devotee who has spent countless hours immersed in the whimsical world of Jim Henson’s creations, I can’t help but feel a pang of melancholy with the announcement that MuppetVision 3D is closing its doors at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This iconic attraction, with its cornball humor and environmental effects, has been a cherished part of my visits to the park since the early ’90s.

Just announced: The quirky, reptilian, and unconventional characters from Pixar’s Monsters Inc. are soon to replace the Muppets in Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ Courtyard at Walt Disney World Resort. Though the anticipation for fresh experiences at the parks is high, some devoted fans lament over the disappearance of a beloved classic attraction.

ABC News shared the following shortly after the new developments were announced.

The popular MuppetVision 3D is set to close at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, paving the way for the upcoming Monstropolous attraction. However, you won’t have to say goodbye to your favorite Muppet characters permanently, as they are moving to a new location! They will now be taking over Aerosmith’s role in the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster located within the Sunset Boulevard section of the park.

Undeniably, there has been a great deal of lamentation and frustration among dedicated Disney fans and Henson enthusiasts all over, but there may still be a chance for this attraction. Although the parks were established based on Walt’s philosophy of “keep moving forward,” there could potentially be a method to safeguard this piece of history.

Moving out the Muppets

Muppet*Vision 3D, created in 1991 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, was one of the final projects overseen by Jim Henson before his passing. Since then, this 3D production with its quirky humor and environmental effects has earned a devoted following among fans, who appreciate its kitschy charm.

Due to its enormous fan base and its association with the renowned Henson, many supporters are justified in feeling disgruntled over Disney’s potential involvement with this significant part of the Muppet legacy. Yet, it seems that fans may not need to bid farewell quite so soon.

It’s been suggested that Apple and Disney may transfer the Muppet Theatre attraction into a Vision Pro VR experience (as depicted here). However, this could simply mean moving it rather than completely reimagining it. Given the theatre’s significance to the franchise, scaling back the project might be the most practical solution for keeping the show active.

Although this popular attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is adored by many, it holds charm not only for its storyline but also for utilizing some clever 3D effects, which we often refer to as “affordable 3D illusions.” However, there could be a method to maintain the essence of the experience without having to shut it down entirely.

On Disney’s grounds, there are numerous 3D/4D attractions, but none hold quite the same renown as MuppetVision. Essentially, given its unique status, it would be wise for Disney to ensure its continuation, even if in a more compact setting. Fortunately, it seems that a bus trip could take you there.

Even though EPCOT has undergone significant transformations recently, it’s not such a far-fetched thought to consider inviting the Muppets. After their previous appearance during the Food and Wine Festival endorsing the peculiar pickle milkshake, they’ve already proven they can add a touch of fun. However, one might wonder if all the Muppets could join in on the fun?

If you’re as frequent at Park-Hopping as this author, you’d be familiar with EPCOT. Moreover, you’d be aware that the Disney and Pixar Short Film Festival features a compact yet charming 3D theater, playing a set of Disney and Pixar animated shorts. Remarkably, these movies are also accessible on Disney+ right now.

Instead of eliminating the final remnant of Henson’s magic, wouldn’t it be more fitting to keep it alive at EPCOT, much like Disney revived Michael Jackson as Captain EO in 2009? This would undoubtedly bring immense joy to a legion of Muppet enthusiasts.

Granted, this wouldn’t be the same experience, and scenes with the animatronics and Sweetums would have to be filmed and spliced, but it could work. It’s not like Disney hasn’t worked similar magic before.

Absolutely, it has a nostalgic feel. Yes, it can be a bit cheesy. And yes, it definitely harks back to the ’90s. But despite its retro vibe, it’s exactly this aspect that adds to the unique charm of Muppet*Vision. Visitors aren’t drawn by modernity; they come for the whimsical absurdity. After all, wasn’t this Jim Henson’s intention when creating the attraction?
