Disney Wins Again at Thanksgiving Box Office Thanks to Zootopia 2

While some viewers get tired of sequels, reboots, and revivals, Hollywood loves them. Disney recently had a big success with a film that solidifies their dominance at the Thanksgiving box office.

Disney had a record-breaking Thanksgiving weekend in 2024 with Moana 2, earning $225.2 million over five days – significantly more than the $125 million earned by Frozen 2 in 2019. Building on this success, Disney continued its strong performance in 2025, with Zootopia 2 achieving the second-highest Thanksgiving opening weekend ever, bringing in between $158 and $159 million.

The new movie Zootopia was expected to earn about $125 million during its first five days in theaters. However, it quickly exceeded those predictions, becoming the second-highest-grossing film on Saturday of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, adding $36 million to its total.

These numbers represent earnings only from the U.S. market. Zootopia 2 also performed incredibly well internationally, bringing in $400 million from overseas, including a remarkable $272 million in China. Worldwide, the film earned a total of $556 million, making it the fourth-highest-grossing opening weekend of all time.

Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, said the fantastic reception to Zootopia 2 shows how much people around the world love the movie, and highlights the amazing job done by the filmmakers and actors. He called it a moment of pride for Disney Animation and the entire company, and a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season.

I was absolutely blown away by the original Zootopia – it earned over a billion dollars worldwide back in 2016, which is incredible considering it only cost $150 million to make! I’ve heard the sequel had a similar production budget, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it hits that billion-dollar mark too. It’s already made almost half that amount in just its first week – it’s shaping up to be another huge success!

How Does the Sequel Compare to Zootopia?

The first movie was a huge success with both critics and audiences. Critics gave it a 98% approval rating based on nearly 300 reviews, while audiences loved it too, giving it a 92% rating. It was also recognized as the best animated film of the year, winning an Oscar.

Fortunately, Zootopia 2 has been very well-received. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 91% rating based on over 130 reviews, while audiences gave it an even more impressive 95% score. The film also earned the “Certified Fresh” and “Verified Hot” distinctions.

The animated sequel features the return of the original voice cast, including Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps, Shakira as Gazelle, Idris Elba as Chief Bogo, Alan Tudyk as Duke Weaselton, Nate Torrence as Stu Hopps, Don Lake as Bonnie Hopps, Bonnie Hunt, and Jenny Slate as Dawn Bellwether, alongside Shakira as Gazelle and Idris Elba as Chief Bogo.

The new film features several fresh faces, such as Gary De’Snake, Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Patrick Warburton, Quinta Brunson, and Danny Trejo.

Zootopia 2 is currently playing in theaters.
