Disney Understood Darth Vader Better Than George Lucas

Even though George Lucas created Star Wars, Disney seemed to have a better grasp on the character of Darth Vader. Vader is a truly iconic villain, known and loved far beyond the Star Wars universe as one of the greatest movie villains ever. Within the Star Wars story, he’s also one of the most powerful Sith Lords.

As a huge Star Wars fan, it’s amazing to me that Darth Vader is still such a massive figure, almost fifty years after George Lucas first created all this! I fully expect we’ll see Vader pop up in future movies and shows – whether it’s the menacing dark lord we all know, or flashbacks to his earlier life as Anakin Skywalker. He’s just too central to the story to ever really disappear, you know?

Darth Vader, originally Anakin Skywalker, is a central figure throughout the entire Star Wars saga, appearing in both the most popular and least popular films. George Lucas initially presented him as the villain in the original trilogy and later explained his origins in the prequel films.

Okay, so Disney’s sequels didn’t really focus on Darth Vader as much, but honestly, they still keep bringing him up all the time. And it’s kind of amazing – it feels like Disney actually ‘gets’ what made Vader such a great villain, even more than George Lucas did, you know?

Some Of Darth Vader’s Best Moments Have Come From Disney

Most Star Wars fans would probably say that Disney’s contributions to the franchise include some truly great Darth Vader scenes. His first live-action appearance under Disney came in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Many consider Vader’s appearance in that film to be the most memorable part, showing him as a brutal and relentless killer of Rebels – a side of the character Star Wars hadn’t fully explored before.

The hallway scene with Darth Vader really emphasized his cruelty in a way we hadn’t seen before in any of the Star Wars films, and people are still praising Rogue One for that powerful portrayal. Before Rogue One, the Star Wars Rebels animated series had already started showing Vader as a truly frightening and unbeatable villain.

Disney’s Star Wars shows and films have finally delivered on a long-held fan desire: seeing Darth Vader in action. Whether it’s the exciting battles in Rebels and Obi-Wan Kenobi, or the memorable hallway fight in Rogue One, these scenes prove it. For years, fans could only dream of seeing Vader fully unleash his Sith powers, but Disney has made it happen.

George Lucas Could Only Do So Much With Darth Vader

It’s important to remember that Lucas wasn’t to blame when Disney’s Star Wars films surpassed his original work with Darth Vader. This wasn’t possible with the original, heavy Vader suit used in the 1970s and 80s, which limited what director George Lucas could achieve with the character in the first Star Wars trilogy.

The prequel trilogy faced challenges in telling Darth Vader’s story because it had to go back in time. George Lucas focused on Anakin Skywalker’s life before he became the villain, explaining how Vader came to be. While this showed why Vader existed, it shifted the focus away from Darth Vader himself and onto Anakin’s journey.

Darth Vader has become even more compelling under Disney’s ownership for several reasons. Unlike the original films from the 1970s, Disney isn’t limited by budget or technology, or by a rigid storyline. This allows them to explore the Star Wars timeline freely and showcase Darth Vader at the height of his power, something George Lucas wasn’t able to do.

Disney’s Star Wars Is Not Done With Darth Vader

Disney’s continued use of Darth Vader is particularly interesting because the character’s story isn’t over. He’s such a well-known figure that it’s unlikely he’ll ever be permanently retired from the franchise. As long as there are Star Wars stories being told, Darth Vader will likely play a part, as we’ve seen in shows and films like Rebels, Rogue One, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka.

The second season of Ahsoka is expected to premiere in 2026, and Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker. Although the new season might emphasize Anakin’s time as a Jedi, the presence of Darth Vader was strongly felt in the first season. Christensen’s continued involvement with Star Wars suggests we’ll be seeing more of Darth Vader as well.

This clearly shows that Disney’s version of Star Wars is portraying Darth Vader differently than George Lucas originally did, and they seem intent on continuing this approach.
