Disney+ to include vertical videos on its app

Disney+ will start offering short, vertical videos within the next year to keep viewers more engaged, according to a Disney executive.

This change is part of the company’s plan to get people to use its app more often, especially on their phones.

Disney+ is aiming to become a daily habit for fans, and mobile is key to achieving that, according to Erin Teague, a company executive. They plan to offer all of their short-form video content in one convenient app.

According to Teague, the company plans to improve this feature over time, exploring new ways to present information with different formats, categories, and content.

Short-form romantic dramas, often called ‘micro dramas,’ are creating new job opportunities in the entertainment industry. However, because these productions are typically made with smaller budgets, Hollywood unions are expressing concerns.

Disney highlighted its growing involvement with artificial intelligence during its presentation. Last month, they announced a partnership with OpenAI, the company behind the AI video generator Sora. This deal allows Sora users to create short videos featuring over 200 Disney characters, and even generate images of those characters using ChatGPT. While some of these AI-created videos will be available on Disney+, Disney confirmed that the likenesses and voices of real people won’t be used.

Disney also said it would invest $1 billion into the AI company.

Disney is increasingly using AI to attract Gen Alpha – the newest generation – who are used to interacting with technology and want entertainment they can participate in, not just watch, according to Teague.

She explained that AI is helping them move forward quickly, which is why working with companies like OpenAI is so important. Their goal is to create a more engaging and interactive experience for fans, all while still valuing human creativity and keeping users safe.
