Disney taps Joy Ride director to helm The Princess Diaries 3

Disney taps Joy Ride director to helm The Princess Diaries 3

As a dedicated fan who has grown up with the enchanting world of Genovia, I am thrilled beyond words about the upcoming installment of The Princess Diaries 3! With Disney making strategic moves by bringing onboard Adele Lim to direct this sequel, I can’t help but feel my heart flutter like Mia Thermopolis did when she first heard the news.

The upcoming third installment of “The Princess Diaries” series is progressing, as Disney has chosen a director with an enjoyable background for the next sequel within their franchise!

According to Meg Cabot’s young adult novels, “The Princess Diaries” narrates the tale of Mia Thermopolis, an average high school student who finds herself in an extraordinary situation when her grandmother unexpectedly visits and discloses a hidden truth: Mia’s father was the prince of the country Genovia, making her next in line for the throne. Following a transformation to make her a stunning beauty, Mia juggles learning the ways of royalty while trying to maintain her ordinary life.

In the year 2001, the movie debuted featuring Anne Hathaway, who was relatively unknown at the time, as Mia, alongside Disney icon Julie Andrews portraying her grandmother Clarisse. The film became a blockbuster, earning $165 million and catapulting Hathaway to stardom. Both actresses reprised their roles in the 2004 sequel titled “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

There’s been some talk here and there about a third movie, but so far nothing has materialized. This is largely because Hathaway has pursued more daring roles as an Academy Award-winning actress. Interestingly, Disney is now in the works on a new film, which will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, Naia Cucukov, and Melissa Stack, with Flora Greeson handling the scriptwriting duties.

Currently, Adele Lim serves as the director for this film. Prior to this role, she had experience writing for multiple television series. Notably, she co-wrote the screenplay for the 2018 blockbuster “Crazy Rich Asians.” She was praised for her work on rewriting the movie’s climactic third act, featuring a tense confrontation between Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh that many found impressive. The film ultimately earned $239 million globally.

After that, Lim shifted to Disney where she collaborated on scriptwriting and directing the 2021 animated movie “Raya and the Last Dragon.” Despite being released during a pandemic, the film managed to thrive. Following this success, Lim made her directorial debut in comedy with the racy film titled “Joy Ride.

Speaking to Deadline, Lim looked eager to take part in the film.

As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life.  We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.

The decision to involve Lim in this project seems somewhat unexpected, leading one to ponder if the film might benefit from a lead actor of Asian descent, given Lim’s previous projects. It is anticipated that Hathaway will feature in the upcoming sequel, meaning it’s not a complete reboot, but rather a continuation. However, specific details about their roles and storylines remain undisclosed. Given Lim’s past achievements, her involvement suggests that The Princess Diaries is on its way to success and may well become another eagerly awaited sequel for fans to savor in the coming years.
