Disney Star Reveals SHOCKING Truth About Controversial Gay Scene That Broke the Internet!
In a candid discussion, Josh Gad addressed the stir caused by the portrayal of his character LeFou’s sexuality in the 2017 live-action version of Disney‘s Beauty and the Beast.
I, a diehard fan here, can’t help but share my excitement about the magical bond my favorite 43-year-old actor’s character shared with the dashing Gaston, portrayed flawlessly by Luke Evans, in that enchanting movie production. Alongside Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, and the legendary Kevin Kline, this fairy tale adventure was masterfully directed by Bill Condon.
2017 saw Josh Gad’s character LeFou from the film promoting through Attitude, hinting that viewers would witness an exclusive gay scene in a Disney production for the first time. However, what transpired was merely a short dance scene involving LeFou and another male character.
In a reference to his new book ‘In Gad We Trust’, Gad expressed, if he were gay, he would likely feel upset by the public’s response to a certain scene in the book, as reported by Entertainment Weekly upon publishing excerpts from it on its release day.
Originally from Hollywood, Florida, the individual expressed in the book that they believed the character was insignificant and the scene wasn’t lengthy enough to meet the expectations set by the director’s promotion.
As a lifestyle expert, I must admit that, unlike some members of the queer community, I didn’t see LeFou as the groundbreaking representation they had been eagerly anticipating. To envision a Pride celebration centered around a Disney sidekick, who is somewhat villainous, dancing with a man for a mere moment, seems rather unlikely to me as a significant cinematic watershed moment.
In a chatty yet momentous exchange, voice actor Gad shared insights about an informal discussion he had with directors Michael Condon, Stephen Chbosky, and Evan Spiliotopoulos during the making of the Disney movie Frozen.
In the conversation, Gad mentioned that the chat centered around the unique degree of loyalty LeFou holds towards Gaston. He also shared that during our talks, we pondered over whether LeFou’s affection for Gaston was simply admiration or something deeper, like being in love with him.
In the book, Gad stated that LeFou’s collaborators were deeply admiring of Gaston, not out of sexual attraction, but from a profound affection, respect, and faith in the man they fought alongside for numerous years.
The team agreed that exploring LeFou’s sexual orientation as a key element in his character development within the movie was an important topic to delve into humorously.
Since my role was more of a supporting character, I didn’t feel it was appropriate to introduce sexuality as a significant aspect for this character who wasn’t central to the plot. However, when I heard about the scene (which was described to me), it seemed innocuous enough – just a brief, entertaining moment that might go unnoticed by viewers.
He remarked on the reaction, saying, “‘Everybody seemed to glance at one another, questioning, ‘Is that really it? Was all that commotion for this?’
In the midst of working on this film project, I wasn’t explicitly informed that my character’s sexuality would take center stage in the storyline. This aspect of the movie’s narrative came as an unexpected yet enlightening surprise during production.
In this movie, the crucial scene was never portrayed as a moment we’d emphasize or take pride in, Gad mentioned. If it had been, I wouldn’t have accepted what appeared to be a gentle, unassuming scene. It was too insignificant and lacking substance to amount to anything more than what it seemed.
In a March 2017 interview, Condon stated that LeFou has days when he aspires to be like Gaston and other days when he feels drawn to kiss him.
Here’s my take on it: “I find myself torn between desires sometimes, but Josh transforms these uncertainties into something delightful and subtly satisfying. The ultimate reward, though, I wouldn’t dare spoil.
In the book, it was stated that Condon, who is openly gay, felt regretful due to the negative public reaction to his comments. He mentioned that people were unwilling to discuss the matter further except for the ‘specifically gay instance.’
Gad, who was part of The Book of Mormon musical on Broadway, expressed joy if the spectators perceived it as a uniquely heartwarming, gay-themed scene, but Condon’s enthusiasm about the incident may have raised expectations too much.
As soon as we highlighted it and appeared to pat ourselves on the back, Gad noted, we had unwittingly summoned trouble and anger.
Back in March 2017, I couldn’t wait for the cinema doors to open for that film! It was an absolute blockbuster, raking in over $1.26 billion worldwide. In the U.S. alone, it grossed a staggering $504 million, which is mind-blowing when you consider its initial budget of just $300 million. Simply put, it was a cinematic triumph that left me utterly spellbound!
In addition, it was nominated for two Oscars in 2018, specifically for the categories of Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
