Disney+ has quickly become known for its popular, ongoing streaming series. However, the show that’s been on the platform the longest might surprise you. Since its launch seven years ago, Disney+ has consistently offered shows connected to its famous brands like Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar.
Disney+ is known for its ongoing stories within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars universe. Star Wars has given us popular shows like The Mandalorian and Andor, while Marvel has delivered limited series such as WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Some shows, like Loki and Daredevil: Born Again, are designed to run for multiple seasons.
Disney+ has heavily depended on Marvel and Star Wars shows to attract viewers, even if many of those shows only last one or two seasons. So far, none have gone beyond three seasons, with The Mandalorian being one of the few to reach that mark. Because of this, many people likely think of The Mandalorian as Disney+’s longest-running series.
Actually, the title of longest-running Disney+ show belongs to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. It debuted on Disney+ on the service’s launch day and finished with its fourth season in 2023. This makes it the longest-running exclusive series on Disney+, as no other show has lasted more than three seasons.
How High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Became Disney+’s Longest-Running Series
I have to say, I wasn’t entirely surprised to learn High School Musical: The Musical: The Series lasted as long as it did! It really benefited from being one of the very first shows on Disney+, giving people a lot to check out when the service launched. Plus, there’s that built-in connection with the original High School Musical – so many of us already had a fondness for that world, and it drew us in right away.
Viewers quickly connected with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Its documentary-style format, catchy songs, and the rising stars Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett all contributed to its success. The series also appealed to original High School Musical fans thanks to appearances by familiar faces like Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabeel, Kaycee Stroh, and Monique Coleman.
The huge popularity of The Series guaranteed Disney+ would continue to renew it, so the streaming service wasn’t behind the show’s ending after four seasons. Instead, the show’s creator, Tim Federle, chose to end it after season four to deliver a satisfying conclusion to the story he envisioned, rather than risk an unfinished ending if the show had been cancelled.
Despite ending in 2023, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series remained Disney+’s longest-running show for three years. A big reason for this was its consistent release schedule – a new season came out every year. Unlike many streaming shows that make viewers wait a long time for new episodes, this series was known for its quick and reliable yearly returns.
Will Any Current Disney+ Shows Beat High School Musical’s Record Length?
What’s truly remarkable is that High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is likely to remain the Disney+ show with the most seasons for a while. Only one other show, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, has been renewed for a fourth season, and it’s expected to premiere later this year. While it will match the record, it won’t surpass it.
It will likely be several years before any show surpasses the record currently held by High School Musical. While Daredevil: Born Again, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, X-Men ’97, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Star Wars: Visions are all planned for three seasons, none have been officially renewed beyond that. Even with renewals, a show would need to be confirmed for a fifth season to break the record.
Of all the Disney+ shows currently airing, Percy Jackson and the Olympians has the best chance of lasting five seasons. Since the series adapts one book per season, and there are five books in the main series, it’s likely Disney will allow the story to finish as planned. If that happens, Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 5 could become the longest-running Disney+ show, surpassing High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
