Marvel Studios has revised its plans for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This phase, which included shows like WandaVision and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, is still being discussed by fans, especially because of how it sets up the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. Key heroes who appeared in Phase 4 will be returning to face off against Doctor Doom.
For years, Marvel fans have closely followed the order of releases within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially as the storyline has become increasingly complex with the introduction of the multiverse. Recently, an update from Marvel has caused some confusion among fans about where certain projects fit into the overall timeline.
Marvel Studios recently updated the official timeline for the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+. With Spider-Man: No Way Home now available on the platform in certain regions, Marvel has placed the film within the existing Phase 4 sequence. Specifically, No Way Home now appears on the Disney+ timeline between Eternals and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
This is the first time the studio has significantly altered the release order of movies within the MCU timeline. Usually, films are only added to the timeline when they become available for streaming.
Currently, No Way Home isn’t available on Disney+ in the U.S., meaning American viewers can’t see the recent updates. However, this might be a sign that the movie will be added to Disney+ in the U.S. within the next few months.
Could More MCU Timeline Changes Be On the Way?
With most Marvel shows and movies appearing on Disney+ in the order they came out in theaters, don’t expect future releases to change that pattern. The recent addition of No Way Home to the service doesn’t signal a shift in how things will work.
It’s unusual for the studio to go so far back in time and add a movie to the established Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. While they might shift the placement of existing movies as the story evolves, those kinds of changes will likely be infrequent.
Following the success of No Way Home, this year’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is poised to continue the collaborative approach between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. As another joint project, it will also need to work within Sony’s existing streaming deals.
Don’t be surprised if it takes a while for Brand New Day to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s possible the story won’t begin until well into Phase 7 or even Phase 8, several years from now.
