Disney pulls the plug on Lando Calrissian TV series starring Donald Glover
As a lifelong Star Wars fan who has eagerly awaited each new addition to the galaxy far, far away since I was just a wee lad, I must confess that I find myself feeling both disheartened and intrigued by the latest developments concerning the Lando Calrissian series.
Since the debut of “The Mandalorian” in 2019, Disney has produced numerous “Star Wars” TV shows including “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Andor,” and “Ahsoka.” With the latest show, “The Acolyte,” receiving mixed reviews from fans and critics, it seems that the abundance of these “Star Wars” series might be becoming too much. Disney has more planned, such as the upcoming release of “Skeleton Crew” on Disney+ this year, but CEO Bob Iger hinted at reducing the number of series in major franchises like Marvel. It’s likely that this reduction will also affect the “Star Wars” series.
It’s not too surprising to learn that Disney has cancelled a planned Lando Calrissian series, considering the character is known for his roguish ways and first appeared in 1980’s “The Empire Strikes Back.” Billy Dee Williams originally portrayed him, while Donald Glover played a younger version of him in 2018’s “Solo.” It was expected that Glover would reprise his role for this new series.
In an update shared with Collider, director Justin Simien explained that despite having a script, concept art, and even a bible outlining the project, unfortunately, the production didn’t come together as planned.
For me, it has to be done pretty straight on. Like, ‘I am in grief. I do not feel good.’ I have to let myself feel those feelings. There’s so much that I experience that I get to keep forever and take into the next project. I can’t obviously take the storyline or the IP or the characters, but there’s so much more that I got, as a maker, and that’s mine. Sorry, it’s too late, you can’t take that part back.
I feel bad for Simien and everyone who was working on the show; it can’t be fun to learn that the thing into which you’ve put a ton of effort won’t be going forward. On the other hand, I think Disney does need to do some culling if it wants people to be excited about a Star Wars show again. There’s only been one major Marvel release this year (sorry, Echo): Deadpool & Wolverine, which has become a smashing success. It was nice to miss the MCU long enough to want to go back. I suspect Disney is trying to do that same thing with Star Wars.
I’m thrilled to share that I’m still employed and kicking goals! I’m currently peddling a docuseries titled Hollywood Black, and I’m also working on a live-action Star Trek comedy series, with the fantastic Tawny Newsome leading the charge. You won’t believe this, but I used to dream about space as a kid while watching that show. Well, guess what? I’m living that very same childhood dream now!
