Disney Plus quietly "axes" a beloved Marvel series

As a gamer who’s been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since its inception, it’s been quite a rollercoaster ride, with each new release bringing fresh excitement and anticipation. The arrival of Disney Plus has only added fuel to the fire, allowing us to delve deeper into the MCU lore than ever before. Shows like WandaVision, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, and Marvel Studios’ Legends have been staples in my streaming lineup, offering a unique perspective on our favorite superheroes.

Since 2021, Marvel Studios and Disney Plus have been closely collaborating. After wrapping up the Infinity Saga, Marvel shifted its focus to television on streaming platforms. Their aim was to expand the universe even more, and they’ve been successful with this through shows like WandaVision, leading to a total of eleven series now airing on Disney Plus within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the spinoff Agatha All Along from WandaVision.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a far larger and more varied world thanks to the original series enriching its backstory. Not every show has reached the same heights of popularity, but they’ve each touched different segments of TV audiences that might not have embraced the MCU otherwise. From the sitcom-style episodes in WandaVision to the legal humor found in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, there’s something appealing for fans across the board.

Nevertheless, there’s one show that has consistently graced the Disney Plus platform since the initial phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on streaming. Regrettably, it appears its journey may have reached a halt (temporarily).

Marvel Legends may have been quietly cancelled by Disney Plus

It appears as though Marvel Studios’ Legends might have been discreetly terminated by Disney Plus, according to Screen Geek. Marvel fans on Reddit have been discussing the possibility that the series has been discontinued, since it is no longer being released alongside any of the MCU films.

Initially aired in 2021 as a spin-off to WandaVision, this series featured short segments that retraced the history of Wanda Maximoff and Vision within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Following these initial episodes, subsequent MCU films and Disney Plus shows have been accompanied by additional episodes. These episodes serve to delve into the backstories of various characters such as The Falcon, The Winter Soldier, Loki, Black Widow, the Tesseract, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne, Peggy Carter, Nick Fury, and many others.

The series aired for two seasons from 2021 to 2023, releasing an episode in tandem with each new Marvel production. However, it’s been nearly a year since we last got a fresh episode, leaving fans puzzled. At first glance, one might think that the 46th episode could have wrapped up the second season and we’re just waiting for the third. But upon further scrutiny, this theory doesn’t quite add up.

2024 has been an incredible year for me as a Marvel fan, with the arrival of “Echo” in January, the long-awaited union of Deadpool and Wolverine on the big screen, and the ongoing series “Agatha All Along”. However, it seems that there hasn’t been any new content from Marvel Legends short series on Disney Plus since late 2023.

Currently, a fan has proposed an idea that those specific projects might not have corresponding Marvel Legends episodes because the main characters are relatively new to the MCU. However, if you revisit the earlier episodes of Marvel Legends, you’ll notice that figures like Kamala Khan from Ms. Marvel, Monica Rambeau from WandaVision, Carol Danvers from Captain Marvel, and even the Guardians of the Multiverse from What If…? all had their own episodes in Marvel Legends previously.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but wonder what became of Marvel Studios’ Legends. My best guess is that it was regrettably axed due to the changes in Marvel’s release strategy. Following the setbacks of films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, along with the Disney Plus series Secret Invasion, it seems that Marvel Studios underwent a shift towards a “less is more” approach, as proposed by Kevin Feige and Bob Iger. This strategy appears to involve taking fewer risks and concentrating their efforts on projects they are confident will thrive.

Disney Plus quietly "axes" a beloved Marvel series

Since then, there have been whispers that Disney Plus series like “She-Hulk: Attorney At Law” might have been secretly terminated, while shows such as “Moon Knight,” “Ms. Marvel,” and “Hawkeye” are rumored to be in line for second seasons. Additionally, it’s been hinted that planned sequels for characters like Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, and the Eternals could also be scrapped.

In essence, something similar might apply to Marvel Studios’ Legends as well. To be clear, creating a show like this doesn’t necessarily involve much risk. However, it’s plausible that the studio decided to allocate their resources towards other projects rather than rehashing MCU history which fans can easily explore on their own.

Although there’s no final decision about the future of the series, it’s currently off the air. Fans of Deadpool, Wolverine, and the X-Men movie series might have appreciated an episode or two to bring them up to speed on the X-Men storyline. Similarly, a recap of Echo and Agatha Harkness’ backstories would have been beneficial since it’s been three years since their initial appearances in the shows.

Hey there fellow gamers! Crossing my fingers and toes here, hoping we get another round of Marvel Studios’ Legends someday. Maybe then it can finally catch up on those missed episodes I’ve been dying to see.
