Disney made Deadpool & Wolverine cut an explicit joke about Mickey Mouse
As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent revelation about the censored line in Deadpool & Wolverine has left me both amused and nostalgic. The audacity of Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy to include such a blatantly irreverent jab at Disney is akin to a naughty child sticking their tongue out at the school bully – it’s just not done, but somehow, it’s impossible not to laugh.
In a playful and frank manner, Deadpool and Wolverine didn’t hesitate to crack jokes, even those poking fun at production companies such as Fox and Disney, during the filming of their movie. However, Disney found one joke to be overly offensive.
The pivotal moment under discussion was conceived by leading actor Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy. This moment appears towards the film’s end, where Deadpool is complaining about Disney not featuring another X-Men cameo in the movie. Now, due to Disney revealing the original script, we can share the omitted line with you.
In this movie, Deadpool and Wolverine share the screen with a host of characters from previous Marvel films, including Gambit, Elektra, and Blade. However, Deadpool is frustrated that they couldn’t include Magneto as well. “What, we can’t even spare one more X-Man? Disney is stingy,” Deadpool grumbles. “I’m choking on all this Disney merchandise.
The line was later replaced in the final cut by Deadpool saying: “It’s like Pinocchio jamming his nose up my ass for lying like crazy.” Sure, it’s a funny replacement, but it doesn’t quite land as well.
As a cinema enthusiast, I must admit that I found it amusing to learn that director Shawn Levy initially didn’t want the now-infamous line to be heard by audiences. In an interview with Digital Spy, he shared a secret pact with Ryan Reynolds: they vowed never to reveal this line in their graves. However, he did mention that it was eventually replaced with another raunchy dialogue involving Pinocchio. I wonder how long that promise lasted… perhaps just a couple of months?
Deadpool & Wolverine is now streaming on Disney+.
Ryan Reynolds may have found his next superhero role!
According to reports from Variety, it seems Ryan Reynolds might be gearing up to play another superhero character – this time in a potential Mighty Mouse movie by Paramount Animation. The Mighty Mouse character dates back to 1942 with the short film “The Mouse of Tomorrow.” Matt Lieberman, who worked on Free Guy, is currently developing the script for this project.
Definitely keep an eye out for Mighty Mouse developments!
