As a theater enthusiast with a soft spot for musicals and a touch of nostalgia for my childhood years spent glued to the silver screen, I can hardly contain my excitement about “The Greatest Showman” gracing the stage! Having grown up with the magic of Disney, I’ve witnessed the enchantment that these timeless stories have brought to millions worldwide. The fusion of the big screen and the great white way is a dream come true for many, myself included.

Folks, here’s the exciting news you’ve been anticipating: The spectacular performance of “The Greatest Showman” will soon take the stage!

Disney Theatres is currently working on a stage play version of the 2017 blockbuster movie featuring Hugh Jackman. They unveiled this project during their D23 Expo, a fan convention held every two years in Anaheim, on Friday. Further details about the cast, creative crew, and performance venue will be disclosed at a later time.

“The film ‘The Greatest Showman’ is inspired by the business ventures of P.T. Barnum, creator of the Barnum & Bailey Circus. The movie, helmed by director Michael Gracey, showcases stars like Zendaya, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Keala Settle, with a captivating aerial duet performed by the two mentioned.”

The soundtrack, which became number one, included 11 catchy original songs penned by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. One of these, the empowering “This Is Me,” even got them an Oscar nomination. A second album dropped the next year, offering fresh interpretations performed by artists like Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Panic! At the Disco, Missy Elliott, and others.

Despite receiving varied opinions from critics, the movie managed to maintain a lengthy 219-day run at the box office and amassed a global earnings of $435 million, placing it among the top-earning live-action musicals ever made. Notably, Jackman performed the film’s songs during his worldwide tour in 2019 as well.

The first production stemming from the 2019 Disney-Fox merger will be a stage project. Notably, it’ll be one of Disney’s rare live-action film adaptations for the stage, as most of their musicals have been derived from animated movies such as “Mary Poppins” and “Newsies”. On the other hand, productions like “Tarzan” and “The Little Mermaid” have been based on animated films.

Disney Theatricals is working on bringing “The Greatest Showman” to the stage, alongside other musical adaptations such as “Coco” and “Tangled”. Currently, “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” are running on Broadway, while “Frozen” is touring across the U.S. and performing in London’s West End. A new North American tour for a 30th anniversary production of “Beauty and the Beast” is set to start next year, and a brand-new staging of “Hercules” will premiere in London in 2025.
