I absolutely adore Disney Parks – they’re so much more than just movies come to life! Being inside the stories, riding the attractions, and actually meeting characters like Mickey or a princess… it’s magical! I’m so excited to hear that one of my favorite non-human characters is coming to the parks in a really special way next year, and I’m hoping this is just the beginning of even more immersive experiences!
Olaf from Disney’s Frozen is a beloved character, and guests can currently meet him at Disney parks. However, the current meet-and-greets feature a performer in a large costume that doesn’t quite capture the magic of the Olaf seen in the movie. Now, Walt Disney Imagineering has revealed a brand new, free-moving Olaf animatronic is coming to both World of Frozen lands! One is already available at the newly opened land in Hong Kong Disneyland (2024), and the other will debut in Disneyland Paris early next year. The new Olaf looks amazing and is much more true to the character we all know and love.
There are two World of Frozen areas – one at Hong Kong Disneyland and another opening in Paris next year. It looks fantastic!
I remember when Disney showed off a walking Groot figure – it was amazing! But sadly, we never got to actually meet it in the parks. It felt more like a test to see if it was even possible. Of course, the BDX droids in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge also roam around, so this isn’t entirely new territory, but it’s still incredibly exciting to see them pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with these animatronics.
In the past few years, Walt Disney Imagineering has made impressive advancements in audio-animatronics technology. The characters in Tiana’s Bayou Adventure appear incredibly realistic and animated, and the new audio-animatronic figure at Disneyland is the most lifelike one created so far.
Next year, a remarkably lifelike Olaf animatronic will be appearing at two Disney Parks. It’s so technologically impressive – and charming – that it might be worth traveling to see it! The level of detail is truly amazing.
It’s amazing to think I could be in World of Frozen and have Olaf suddenly start chatting with me, but it’s also a little unsettling. While Olaf is adorable when Josh Gad voices him, when he’s silent, he just stares, and it feels like he’s about to jump out and scare you like in Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Currently, it looks like visitors to U.S. parks will have to wait before experiencing this new technology. There’s a possibility of seeing Olaf at the Norway pavilion in Epcot, near the Frozen ride. I’m hoping we’ll get a second ‘World of Frozen’ area as part of the Disneyland expansion, which would likely include Olaf as well.
