Disney icon “deeply disappointed” by series cancellation

Actress Anika Noni Rose, known for her role in “The Princess and the Frog,” has spoken up following Disney‘s decision to scrap their proposed spin-off series featuring Tiana.

In the 2009 movie, Rose portrayed Disney’s initial African American Princess character, and she was initially planned to resume her role for the upcoming Disney+ animated musical series, an announcement made in December 2020.

Just recently, I learned some heartbreaking news – our favorite show got axed! After giving myself a moment to digest it all, I took to my Instagram to express my feelings.

Last week, it was shared that the show, Tiana, would no longer be airing. Since then, I’ve received numerous messages filled with empathy, encouragement, and deep sadness. Many are inquiring for my response through various media outlets, but I prefer to communicate this news directly to you.

I share the same sense of disheartened feeling as you, that Tiana’s story didn’t get to continue through a series. The series had been eagerly awaited for quite some time, and there was an immense amount of talent poured into it by everyone involved – from Jenn Lee, our dedicated creative leader, to Joyce Sherri, our gifted writer and director, not forgetting the brilliant animators, and a fantastic music team.

She went on to say: “Even though it’s painful for anything you’ve poured your heart and soul into to be cut short, I hope that when the ‘Tiana Special Event’ is broadcast, all of your wonderful, supportive, dedicated fans who have been advocating not just the series, but a sequel to The Princess and The Frog, will watch.

In other words, when I say ‘tune in’, spread the word to everyone you know who cherishes Princess Tiana, Naveen, Louis, Charlotte, Mama Odie, and the enchantment they’ve woven over the years. Let your enthusiasm be evident by tuning in and watching. Demonstrate your affection and anticipation through the numbers that count.

“Until then, we will be continuing to work hard to bring you the most beautiful content we can.”

It’s said that the termination of Tiana is connected to Disney+’s shift towards abandoning lengthy episodic content. On the other hand, Moana 2 underwent changes from being a series on Disney+ to becoming a (highly profitable) film, while The Mandalorian is transitioning from season 4 into a movie instead.

According to Rose’s update, there’s a possibility of a unique, standalone event happening, but specifics are still scarce. Lately, Disney has been promoting the “The Princess and the Frog” franchise more extensively, with appearances at their theme parks.

The Princess and the Frog is available to stream on Disney+.
