As a dedicated fan who has seen more than my fair share of TV shows, both critically acclaimed and overlooked gems, I must say that the renewal of “The Artful Dodger” for a second season is nothing short of delightful!

Shows like “Renegade Nell” and “American Born Chinese”, which received positive feedback, are among those that were terminated prematurely. This is a part of the business’s metrics, and while Disney+ isn’t as notorious as Netflix for cutting shows short, it still happens.

It’s quite surprising that Disney+ and Hulu have announced a second season for “The Artful Dodger” over a year after its debut. Given the first season received minimal attention and it’s been some time since production wrapped up, the release of a second season in 2025 seems rather unanticipated.

For those who are unfamiliar, “The Artful Dodger” is an Australian-produced series that follows on from Charles Dickens’ renowned novel, “Oliver Twist.” Instead of serving time in jail, the character Jack Dawkins, also known as ‘the Dodger,’ portrayed by Thomas Brodie-Sangster, reinvents himself as a budding surgeon in Australia while maintaining a secret side job in gambling.

Jack’s existing lifestyle experiences a significant disruption upon the resurfacing of his former guide, the seasoned thief Fagin, portrayed by David Thewlis. Throughout the first season, Jack navigated the challenges of reconciling his previous and present lives as Fagin embarked on a grand heist. The finale saw Jack sacrificing his freedom to save Lady Belle’s life, but it seemed like his potential release might be conditional on serving Fagin once more.

2023 saw the entire release of the show’s episodes, yet it mainly went unnoticed by many. Consequently, the news about Season 2 coming up seems somewhat unexpected.
