Disney fans hail Kathryn Hahn’s “absolutely perfect” casting for iconic villain role in new remake

Fans are thrilled by reports that Kathryn Hahn is being considered to play Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Tangled. The project was initially revealed in 2024, and Deadline reports Hahn is currently in discussions for the role.

The classic animated film from 2010 centers around Rapunzel, a princess with magical, healing hair. As a baby, she was kidnapped by Mother Gothel, who locks her away in a tower and uses Rapunzel’s powers to remain young herself.

Even though she’s the villain, Gothel is a popular character, largely because of her witty, confident personality and her memorable song, ‘Mother Knows Best’. When news broke that Donna Hahn would be playing her, fans on Reddit enthusiastically agreed she was ideal for the part.

One fan enthusiastically suggested Kathryn as the perfect choice for Mother Gothel, praising her intelligence, mysterious presence, and ability to play a villain. Another fan simply urged Disney to cast her, stating she’s the obvious choice.

“I mean…. Yeah. That’s basically a perfect choice,” agreed a third.

Fans noticed similarities between Mother Gothel and Agatha Harkness, a popular character from Marvel’s WandaVision. Like Gothel, Agatha was revealed to be a witch and later got her own series, Agatha All Along.

Fans are praising the actress’s performance, with one saying it’s ‘perfect casting‘ and noting she naturally embodies villainous roles like Gothel. Another commented she’s being recognized for playing witches, but that this particular performance is exceptional and should continue.

Before Patricia Hahn was cast, Scarlett Johansson was also considered for the part of Mother Gothel, but she had to drop out because of issues with her filming schedule.

The upcoming live-action movie has cast Teagan Croft, known for her role in Titans, as Rapunzel, a character previously voiced by Mandy Moore. She’ll star alongside Milo Manheim from Zombies, who will play the charming thief Flynn Rider – a role previously voiced by Zachary Levi.

I’m so excited to hear that Michael Gracey, the director of The Greatest Showman, is taking on this new project! And even better, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is writing the script – I loved her work! Plus, Kristin Burr, who brought us the upcoming Freakier Friday sequel, is producing, so it’s a really solid team all around. I have high hopes for this one!

The Tangled live-action adaptation doesn’t have a release date yet.

The latest issue of Living Legends is now available, and it’s dedicated to the incredible Dolly Parton! You can find “Dolly at 80” at newsagents and online for only £8.99.
