Disney+ crackdown on UK password sharing with new ‘Extra Members’ plan

As a long-time Disney enthusiast who’s been sharing my account with family and friends across town for years, I must admit, I see both sides of this new Disney+ policy. On one hand, I’ve enjoyed the convenience of having multiple users without paying extra. But on the other, I understand that content creators need to be compensated fairly for their work.

In the UK, Disney+ has rolled out an innovative solution aimed at individual households to address unauthorized password sharing – this is to enhance user experience.

In line with changes made by Netflix, the streaming platform has recently revised its Terms of Service to incorporate a new Additional Member Option.

Originally, Disney+ didn’t allow password sharing among multiple households according to their Subscription Terms. However, they are now planning to implement a system that enforces this rule more strictly. This new feature will enable subscribers to invite additional users from different homes for a small extra charge.

The specific cost for this feature hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s now available for new subscribers. In about a month from the time you receive the email notification, it will also be activated for current subscribers.

New Subscribers will be provided with a personal Disney+ account and login credentials. Although they do not need to reside within the same household as the primary subscriber, they should be based in the same nation.

New Users will gain access to many of the primary account’s perks, however, they may encounter certain restrictions which we haven’t disclosed yet.

Last year, Netflix introduced a new policy aimed at reducing password-sharing: they now allow subscribers to add up to two individuals who don’t reside in their household for an extra fee of approximately £4.99 per month. This fee is likely comparable to what Disney+ may eventually charge.

Last year, Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, announced that Disney+ might enforce stricter measures against unauthorized password sharing.

He shared with CNBC’s Squawk on the Street that this move would significantly enhance their confidence in the business, stating, “We’ve seen some positive results, but we aim for even better outcomes. Netflix sets the benchmark for streaming services; they’ve truly excelled and set a great example for us to follow.”

I truly admire their achievements and feel inspired by their success. It’s incredible to see what one can accomplish with dedication, perseverance, and a vision. If I could replicate even a fraction of what they have accomplished in my own life, it would be an achievement I would cherish deeply.

Iger additionally verified that the enforcement will commence in merely a handful of nations and sectors this summer, with a comprehensive expansion scheduled for September.
